The Super Nintendo
version of Atari's arcade racer Race Drivin'
was simply awful, as was the Genesis port of its prequel,
Hard Drivin'. The 16-bit machines simply did not have enough
graphical horsepower to handle accurate conversions of polygonal
arcade racers, even though both games were relatively primitive. The excellent
32x racer Virtua Racing Deluxe features much more complex
polygonal models than those found in Race Drivin', so it's
conceivable that a 32x port would have been arcade-perfect. Then again,
the Saturn port of Race Drivin' is so awful its borderline
unplayable, so perhaps it's best that this series has been laid to rest
without any further games. Whatever the case, the game was canceled when
it became apparent that the add-on's market share was going down the toilet.
