The long running RBI
Baseball series made an appearance on the 32x, taking more
than a few tips from Sega's own World Series Baseball franchise.
What began as a cartoony diversion in the arcades and on the original 8-bit
Nintendo has grown into a full-fledged baseball simulation, complete with
a MLBPA license, tons of statistics, and numerous gameplay options. You
can play a quick exhibition game, or guide your team through a regular
season, playoff, or World Series. There's even a Home Run Derby, Defensive
Practice, and a very interesting Game Breakers mode that allows you to
practice and hone your ball skills in difficult situations. The simple,
cartoon-like graphics of earlier games has been replaced by a much more
realistic presentation, with all 28 stadium's correctly proportioned infields
and matching outfields. A new close-up batter's box presents you with a
great view of the park and large, smoothly animated character sprites,
obviously modeled after the World Series Baseball games.
You won't get much in the way of silence from RBI
Baseball '95, as the soundtrack is full of mildly irritating
music, as well as constant chatter from the commentator, the umpire, and
the crowd. The control is precise and easy to master, making the actual
gameplay an enjoyably effortless experience. RBI Baseball '95
runs a close second to World Series Baseball, and some
players might even prefer it over Sega's perennial favorite. Recommended.
