Of all the 32x games that Sega planned for release, Sonic 4 certainly caused the most excitement and garnered the most attention. Sega remained oddly tight-lipped about the next-generation installment of their most popular series, and not much is known about it today. Possibly a 3-D platform game similar to Mario 64, it's rumored that parts of Sonic 4 were incorporated into other Sega games including the underrated Saturn racer Sonic R and possibly the unreleased Sonic Xtreme. Regrettably, the Sega 32x came and went without a proper Sonic game, with the odd Knuckles Chaotix serving as a rather poor substitute.
The only Sonic
4 "screenshots" we know of are shown below. They were taken from
a Sega-developed video called "Sonic Ride" (the video can be found in the
archives section of Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn.) The graphics
are most certainly pre-rendered footage, as the visuals are far to complex
for the 32x hardware.
