Go-cart racing games
existed long before the debut of the Super Nintendo, but Mario Kart
set the standard for all cart racers to come. Nintendo's classic mix of
cute graphics, finely tuned control, and flat-out fun gameplay has led
to many imitators, but no equals... even the Nintendo 64 sequel fell short.
Ubi Soft's Street Racer was
one of the better Mario Kart clones for the Super Nintendo
and Genesis, and a 32x port was planned. The SNES version of Street
Racer was the better of the two 16-bit games, sporting brighter
colors, Mode 7 graphical effects, and smoother scaling and rotation. The
32x port was to take the finer aspects of the SNES game and enhance them
with 32x power. Regrettably, Street Racer was canceled, leaving
the 32x library devoid of a good Mario Kart clone (BC
Racers is a BAD clone.)
A highly entertaining
Street Racer update boasting 3-D polygonal tracks later appeared
for the Playstation and import Saturn. The similarities between the update
and the canceled 32x game are unknown.
