Video games based on
sports have always been popular, even those based on golf. Most every console
ever made features at least one golfing simulation, and most of these consoles
were active many years before Tiger Woods made his first appearance. This
popularity of the golfing genre remains something of a mystery, as the
"sport" of golf would seem to be a poor subject on which to base a video
game aimed at teenagers and young adults. Golf is, after all, a spectator
sport, and golf tends to be an activity enjoyed by older adults. It's slow,
it doesn't require fast reflexes, and it doesn't demand a particularly
high level of athleticism, yet it sells video games... go figure. Virtual
Golf was to be a high-end golfing sim highlighting the Scottish
Open, one of the major European golfing tournaments. Virtual Golf
was advertised as being "Also Available for 32x" on the back cover of the
instruction booklet for another Core title, BC Racers, along
with another unreleased game, Soulstar X. The game
was evidently well into development when it was cancelled, and video footage
of the game in action appeared on the videotape included in the Virtua
Fighter Training Pack. The graphics seemed comparable to those
found in 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples, the only 32x
golfing game that ever made it onto the fairway.
Virtual Golf
may also have been under development for the Atari Jaguar under the name
Scottish Open Virtual Golf. The Jaguar, like the 32x, was
the victim of poor marketing and cancelled software.
