Amstel Bock beer, 7% ABV

As far as Dutch bock beers go, Amstel’s version is up there with the rest of them. It is a beer full of body, with not too much gas. Malt is the evident taste, turning pleasingly caramel and sugary in the finish. It has a smooth, warming mouthfeel that you’ll never forget. The aroma is also sweet and caramel. The head is creamy and lacy, but does not have excellent retainment. Overall, the particular malt used seems to lend this beer strong sweet tones, although there are detectable dry undertones in there as well. I prefer this to its close seasonal sibling, Herftbock, which just seems somewhat sharper – nowhere near as good as Amstel bock, one of the kings of beer!
