Hoegaarden, Witbier, 5% ABV

The Belgian Hoegaarden brewery's flagship beer is known by several names the world over. Some call it Wheat Beer, others Blanche, whilst the Flemish name is Witbier, but most simply know it as Hoegaarden.

Hoegaarden Witbier is 5% abv. It has a white creamy head that winds itself around the sides of the speciality polygonal glass that you should almost certainly be drinking it from. The beer is, like most wheat beer, a hazy straw colour. Brewed with 30% wheat, its wheaty taste is complemented by an adjunct of orange rinds, which lend the flavour rather spicy aroma and finish. There are far better Belgian beers out readily available, but try this one, if even only once.

Hoegaarden, Grand Cru, 8.7% ABV

Far superior to it’s cousin, Witbier, Grand Cru truly is grand. The taste is of oranges and wheat, leading to a fruit finish. The taste is preceded by a yeasty aroma, reminiscent of fruit rind. It has a dry texture that warms you up inside, although the alcohol strength is not evident. The high degree of carbonation of this beer gives way to a thick, bubbly head. Smooth, and sometimes, but not always, a bit hard going down. It has a very slightly darker hue than Witbier, though is still cloudy.
