Koningshoeven, Moreeke, 5% ABV
Moreeke tastes far better in bottle that it does on draft, I’ve found. It pours mid- to dark-golden, with a patchy head. Malty, honey tones emanate from its bouquet. The first taste is of sweet caramel. It’s aftertaste warms those cotton socks, with a plethora of flavours – honey, malt, syrup and toffee. Its high carbonation lends it a gassy mouthfeel, climaxing with an explosion of bubbles at the end. This tasty Dutch beer is full-bodied, with some bitter, and perhaps fruity, undertones. It would have truly been on the next level of greatness if it weren’t for the slight excess of fizz, but it’s delicious nevertheless.
Koningshoeven, La Trappe Dubbel, 6.5% ABV
The “double” version of the range contains a prevailing malt character. Its taste is that of a sweet, fruity malt, and the aftertaste is all malt. The mouthfeel gives it the feeling of being a stronger beer, very filling. This is preceded by a sweet caramel bouquet. Despite its high carbonation, it only has a thin, ringed head. A full-bodied, medium-sweet rare Dutch Trappist beer. I believe this is the only Trappist brewery in all of the Netherlands. Its other varieties of this brand are Enkel (single), Triple and Quadrupel. Dubbel is a dark, slightly burnt beer of high quality.
Koningshoeven, La Trappe Tripel, 8% ABV
On first tasting La Trappe Trippel, it seemed it might even take over the number 1 spot in the chart. It didn't, but it's still one damn amazing beer. There is an emerging sweetness in the texture of La Trappe Tripel, and indeed the sweetness dominates the beer. There is a lot of caramel in the first taste, along with some yeastiness. There is a citrus fruitiness, and the alcohol content is immediately evident from the flavour. This explosion of flavour leads to a slight spice in the finish, sweet malt and some yeast. The head is frothy and undulating at first, but dissipates later on.
Like the taste, the bouquet of La Trappe Tripel is alive with character, containing candy, citrus fruit, spicy hops, and some cloves. A sweet, full-bodied beer, well deverved of the coveted number 2 spot in the chart.
