Rules for the International Memorial Tournament
Prologue |
This tournament is a gathering of amateur players from around the world, all of them members of the yahoo club the65thsquare. The tournament was planned before the tragedy that befell so many innocent people on 11 September 2001. We have renamed the tournament, and we now play it as a memorial event to those who have departed. |
A. Registration |
Internal Tournaments are opened to club members, and the general method of registration is by posting a message at the club with your email address. Each member is only allowed to play under one email address. |
B. Format |
B1. Player Selection is entirely up to the captain/captains appointed for their experience and
support in our club tournaments. B2. All players who have signed up for the tournament must be allowed to play. B3. No player may play more than 2 games, and each of these 2 games must be in a different group. B4. A player may not act as a substitute for a further category if he/she is already playing two games as stated earlier. |
C. Scoring |
Points are awarded for a win or draw. The latest FIDE rules of chess will be used as the reference in any disputes, regardless of whether the computer program follows those rules or not.
C1. The winner of each board earns one point, and both players share half a point equally if there
is a draw. |
D. Substitutes |
Each team will name another player as a substitute for each of the 5 categories contested.
This substitute is subject to the terms stated in B4. D1. The substitute player will play if one other player does not show up. If two other players do not show up, the substitute will play the match on the higher board, and his team will forfeit the other match. |
E. Countbacks |
In the unlikely event that both teams have the same number of points upon completion
of the whole tournament, then a tie-break will come into play. E1. Failing this, the team with the most category champions will be declared the winner. E2. Failing this too, countback will be done on each subsequent category board numbers from 2 to 5. If this fails too, the event will be declared as a draw. |
F. Notation |
All players are required to notate as in any real-life tournament, and completed games should
be posted together with the notation on the club's message board. Similar to FIDE rules, no notation means no scores. You may copy the notation automatically generated by the chess programs. |
G. Disputes |
All disputes will be refered to the webmaster of our arbiter section on the our website. Although cheating with computer programs is possible on any chess site on the net, we discourage any use of such software during the tournament. We must all admit that we are amateur players, and as such, subject to human error. Using a chess program does nothing to improve your skills, or to endear you to the other players. This tournament is non-profit, and does not offer any prize money. The objective of the tournament is to enjoy playing chess with each other, and to develop your chess skills, which you may one day need when you play in 'live' chess tournaments. Besides, we are playing in memory of those fallen in the New York Disaster. However, there is nothing anyone can do about internet cheating, especially if the offender maintains a strict denial. The club hopes that all players are honest in their games, and will accept with good faith, your participation in the tournament as being an agreement to play with honesty and integrity. |
