The Zeonic company, original creators of mobile suits, saw the Zimmad's MS-R09 Rick Dom as a serious threat to their supremacy in space mobile suits. The Zaku's lack of beam weaponry put it under par with the Federal
Forces' GM's in space combat, so a new mobile suit had to be designed. Reviving the MS-10 project, Zeonic engineers in the asteriod fortress A Bao A Qu went ahead with the redesign. In December of UC 0079, they finally came out with the finished model: The MS-14A Gelgoog. Mounting dozens of thrusters in its feet, legs, skirt armor and arms, Gelgoogs were extremely manuverable, and their high reactor output enabled them to use beam weapons, something Zeon pilots had wished for for quite a while. The problem was that the war was already steeply declining against the Zeon, and that A Bao A Qu was truly the last remaining Zeon fortress. Most of the 160+ Gelgoogs built were fielded at A Bao A Qu, causing severe damage to the Federation GM's, but all they could shoot for would be to cause the Fed's a steep, costly victory. Many people compare the Gelgoog to the Messerschmitt Me 262 of World War Two. Although faster, stronger and more powerful than the enemy, there just weren't enough and some of them were wasted in the hands of rookie pilots. Nonetheless, Gelgoog's are fearsome mobile suits, able to take down multiple GM's in rapid succession when in the hands of a skilled pilot. In terms of armaments, the Gelgoog was equipped with a strong beam rifle, easily on par with that of the GMs or Gundams, a large Zulu-esque shield, as well as a twin, double bladed beam sword (think of Darth Maul, only with wider blades). When the mission called for it, a Gelgoog could also be fitted with a heavy-duty beam machinegun, capable of reducing a GM to scrap in one burst. Although this high-powered weapon is never seen in
animation, it figures heavily as the main armament of a limited run variant, the MS-14JG Gelgoog Jaeger from the Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket OVA. Visit Newtype Asylum for more information on that Gelgoog variant. Also, in addition to the standard A-type Gelgoog, several other variants were created. These were the high-mobility B-type, the heavilty armed C-type and the commander's personal S-type, distinguished by the Zeon's classic headspike.
