The backbone of the Zeon Space Force, the Musai light cruiser is a fast, light, nimble vessel. While outgunned by the comporable Federal Salamis cruiser, the Musai has the advantage of a better design: While a Salamis has seven main guns and a Musai has only six, at any given time, a Musai can bring all six of its main guns to bear on a single target, whether forward to to the sides, while a Salamis can only bring three or four. Thus, although the Salamis has more guns, the Musai can use more of its own guns at any given time. In addition to its main turrets, Musai light cruisers also mount two large missile launchers for anti-warship combat, ten smaller missile launchers to shoot down Federal fighters, and later, mobile suits. Some are also seen with a pair of smaller secondary guns near the "neck" portion of the ship, as dipicted above. Musai light cruisers also have the advantage of being able to carry three or so of their own mobile suits in a small hangar below the bridge, while Federal warships have to rely on a Columbus class carrier for fighter or mobile suit support. Thrust is provided by a pair of external engines, mounted pontoon-style on a pair of rods leading from the hangar. Another interesting factor is the Komusai (literally means Baby Musai) shuttle, mounted under the bow. This unremarkable little vessel is actually capable of atmospheric re-entry, can carry a mobile suit, and can also be used as a crew escape ship if the Musai itself is damaged.
