Music Clips
Well, here's the dilemma. MP3's are thought by many to be 'gasp' illegal, since they rip off copywrited material. Now, I would never claim to own ANY MP3's since that would be wrong. However, every once in a while, a company producing an artist will decide a good way to get the music out is to put out MP3's. So, these links are, with a few exceptions, all legit recordings put out by the company, so feel no guilt. Anyway, Chuck D from Public Enemy came to NYU and told me MP3's are good, so if you don't trust me, trust him…
Mike Errico - Sooner or Later (Live)
This was recorded by my friend Matty J, and although it isn't the best example of his incredible live show, it is nevertheless a clip…I could always make you a copy of the show (Madison, WI 10/30/99) if you ask really nice.
Mike Errico - Springtime
Taken from the stellar album, Pictures of the Big Vacation, this song comes off fairly well on the disc. It's a song about watching the day pass with the one you love…(Is anyone jealous but me?)
Blurtonia - Pick Up The Pieces
By now, everyone I know should have heard the name Blurtonia out there…for a detailed explination, see my The Flashing Lights - Half The Time
The Flashing Lights are a power-pop band from Ontario. They were spawned from a member of the now-defunct group The Super Friendz, and they make tremendously catchy music. For fans of Sloan, and such.
DJ Beefchow Central
And now for something completely different - DJ Beefchow features a 'Top Ten List' of Drum and Bass MP3's, with great music that I highly doubt you've heard of (save for Chris Rocha, the man who introduced me to the site). Try out the songs, even the (gasp) Canadian ones…you may be surprised by the power of Drum and Bass music.
Princes of Babylon - Meaningless Conversation
As I describe them: G. Love meets Sublime (if they had talent). A great dancy-type group, who have yet to come out with an album, only a sampler. Despite the poor quality of this MP3, it is easy to catch their vibe. Again, I'd be happy to copy their sampler for anyone who wants it.
De La Guarda - Fiesta China
I can't explain this track. It's only 0:38 seconds (just a clip), and it comes from an unreleased soundtrack to the Off-Broadway Show De La Guarda(please don't go to this site if you are visiting me in the near future). Anyway, I can't explain it, and it will mean much more to those that have seen the show, or have an eclectic/world music type taste. But download it anyway.
Geggy Tah - MP3.com
I'd prefer not to put sites online, as opposed to direct links, but you may have to input some info to MP3.com in order to get these to work. Geggy Tah is a great group from NY onLuaka Bop Records(run by Ex-Talking Heads singer and all around cool guy David Byrne). On the label is Cornershop, Clinton, Zap Mama, and other pretty cool stuff. Anyway, Geggy Tah is a catchy eclectic band, and they grow on you big time…enjoy. Oh, and don't worry about giving your info…they don't bother you or give out your Email addy, unless you ask them to (mind the checkmarks)
Millard Powers - MP3.com
Powers is probably best known for his work with Ben Folds in the group Majosha (pronounced Mo-Ja-Sha). However, him, Will Owsley and Zak Starkey (ie: Ringo Starr's son) created a phenomenon of a power pop group called The Semantics. Unfortunately, they never made it, though the album Power Bill remains one of my favourites. Now, Will Owsley is going simply by Owsley, and put out a stellar solo album (with help from Powers), and Powers' solo album can be found at MP3.com. Get the three files, and find a way around paying for it with worse quality ones (if you search, they're there)…or I can always Email them to you…
That's it for now…keep checking for regular updates.
On-Air Clips
I'm working on it, I'm working on it...c'mon, give me a minute to get it ready!
Misc. Multimedia
These links just amuse me to no end...they're interactive, and way too fun, especially the Sampler. Try 'em out:
EYE4U Modular WebSynth
OK, how uncontrollably cool and addictive is this!? I found this on the Looper (Stuart David, ex-Belle and Sebastian bassist) website, and it encouraged you to "Make your own Looper songs." Well, maybe that's going a bit too far, but it is so much fun…my roomie and I would just jam on the synth at the same time, and make crazy tunes. Well, once. But we almost did it for the talent show at NYU…Try it once, and you'll be hooked.
The Interactive Paul's Boutique
I never claimed to be a Beastie Boys fan. I think that Paul's Boutique is a pretty good album, or at least from what I've heard, but their newer stuff is a bit suspect. However, for some reason, this site just cracks me up…there's not that much you can do with it, but it remains fun for long periods of time. And it has such hit lines as "Humpty Dumpty was a big fat egg", "Shake, Your, Rump-Ah", and the infamous "Paul's Boo-Teekuh." As my friend Gavin used to say…'Oh, Mercy.'
Those two'll keep you entertained for a while...keep checking in, though. There'll be more...
