Now there is a real story to this song. It was on valentines day and I'd just been to see a play which my girlfriend was in. We had then gone in to town with the intention of getting a pizza - never an easy task. Pizza hut was closed, so we walked home. I remember feeling a little down, I can't remember why though. What I can remember is, just rounding a corner - the corner that turns left off Dortmund square with a Royal Bank of Scotland cash machine on it - and I suddenly felt, great. I felt that nothing else in the entire world mattered and I was blissfully happy. I felt incredible for all that journey home. Everything, from the scene of a row of houses with some of the lights on to the trees in woodhouse moor filled me with a sort of joy that I can't describe. Friends of mine should be aware that it wasn't God - so no worries there. Whatever it was, I wrote a song about it the following day called 'City Lights', all inspired by the joy i felt, and still feel whenever I take a little time to stop and look at anything in the world. Watch 'American Beauty' - then you'll know what I'm talking about. |
