I, like most people I know, went through a phase when I started writing songs where I could not write a song that didn't have a 'love' lyric in it. There are just too many words that rhyme with love, heart, you, girl etc. So I tried desperately to not write love songs. I tried and I tried, then found that I couldn't write them any more. I came out with a load of stuff that's bull-crap, even for me! The sort of thing that makes Barry White look like the Nuremburg Address. Then it got disasterous. I met my girlfriend, Heather, and she asked me to write a song about her. I was desperately churning out rubbish, until I hit on something. The chorus, which is how i start most of my songs. Even though I had this first line ("Baby stay forever") it still took me the longest out of any songs I've done to write. This is also the first song I did with Helen. She asked if she could do a song with me at my first gig, and we did this one. The harmony really sets off the chorus and this song's become one of my favourites. |
