So What's Your Major??? |
After three quarters at Tech, I have learned that while your major prepares you for your career, it also serves a practical funciton while you're still pursuing your degree, espeicially if you live on campus. Here are some examples of the roles that certain majors fill in residential life: |
Biology |
Biology majors are the resident dorm physicians. Because the health center closes at 4, Biology majors are often called upon to use their considerable knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry and anatomy to treat all sorts of wounds and ailments. If the injury is physical, such as a sprain or twisting an ankle, Fitness and Wellness and Physical Therapy majors are often called in to specialize. |
Computer Science |
Computer Science majors are the official computer repairmen and consultants of the dorm. At any given time, at least three computers on a floor of 40 rooms (assuming that each room has at least one computer) are not operating properly. Call in the Computer Science major! CSC majors can fix any problem from network adapters to kernel 32 errors and everything in between. |
Electrical Engineering / Electrical Engineering Technology |
EE's and EET's are the electricians of the dorms. Consult them if any of your precious electronic devices are malfunctioning, or if you need a creative way to rewire your stereo. You can usually spot the EE's room because it is the only room with power during a brown out; the massive amount of electrical equipment within his room is usually the cause of such a brown out. |
History / English / Literature |
These are the individuals to seek out when you are writing a paper and need help. Because their curriculums consist almost entirely of term papers, they are excellent for offering suggestions and critiques of your writing. They're considerable knowledge of English rules is also handy to have at your disposal when your grade is riding on a huge research paper. They also serve the secondary function of knowing a little bit about everything. Liberal Arts majors such as these take a wide range of classes, therefore they can offer some bit of knowledge on almost every field. Think of them as living dictionaries, encyclopedias, and MLA Handbooks. |
Business |
Consult any business major when practicality is a concern. Business curriculums are strongly grounded in reality, thus they can often see problems that might arise in any project, whether financial or otherwise. |
Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Construction Engineering / Industrial Engineering |
CivE's and their ilk are great builders. Whether you are building shelves, a loft, or improving your bunkbeds, these majors can bring their construction expertise into play to get the job done quickly, correctly, and often better than you could have done it alone. |
Political Science |
Poli Sci majors are natural idealists and politicians. Whenever something is wrong and no one will listen to the residents, the Poli Sci majors will stand up and fight for the common good, often getting great results for their initiative. They are also the ones to consult for any inquiry into an idealogy or an '-ism' (capitalism, communism, socialism, democracy, etc). |
Architecture |
Architecture majors are too damn busy to help anyone. |
Psychology |
Obviously, Psychology majors are great to talk to when you're having problems, or if you just need to talk to someone. Most Psych majors have problems just as bad or worse than yours anyway, so they understand where you're coming from and can offer you some great advice. |
