Irene and I headed for the airport on Monday morning, I had already taken a Valium tablet, cause I'm shit scared of flying (I don’t usually take Valium BTW). So when we got on the plane, I took a mad panic attack & tried to get off the plane, I basically made a complete arse of myself, the stewardess came over and everything! So I took another pills and proceeded to slip into unconsciousness! We got to Chicago 8.5 hours later, and I was soooooo gasping for a cigarette! We waited 1hr then got our connection flight to LA. When we got there, Suzyfoo & her pal Ann were waiting for us. We went back to Ann’s house (about 1 hr drive), made semi-polite conversation then crashed out kinda rapid! The next day was FOOSday! I got up & checked my Email (sad I know) ,and saw that the Barrowland gig had been announced !YIPEE!So I ordered my tix before heading into LA. We got to the Artist Direct building and saw all the other postboarders. No-one really talked to each other too much (which was a shame) but we did chat away with XXFoochickXX and she & her sister were real nice. Bearing in mind that I was low in Nicotine, full of Valium and heavily jet lagged...I probably made a complete arse of myself AGAIN! Schu got us all (soft) drinks & handed out posters,cd's,stickers etc which was well cool. Into the studio! It was really small, and the stage was only about 12inches high. We sat on the floor ,knees touching the stage...
Enter the Mighty Foo! They came on & seemed very relaxed & happy. Dave launched into Breakout, then stopped after after about 30secs saying “It’s just different acoustic!”He was dead right, and it just added to the feeling that we were all witnessing something really very special indeed. You couldn’t help feel like it was similar to the Nirvana unplugged in New York,a one off show that will long be remembered in music folklore. Taylor leathered the living hell out of his kit with the brush sticks(?) to try to obtain his usual volume level, and of course he managed to play them louder than most of us could with conventional sticks! All the classics followed: My Hero, Doll (Dave mistakenly announced that this was the intro song on the 1st album, much to Taylor’s amusement, and he corrected Dave !), They played a great set & talked, joked the whole time too. Dave & Taylor seem to be the best of pals & work together sooo fuckin well. See You, Ain’t It The Life (Taylor on backing vocals!), Monkey Wrench. It was odd to see Dave turn many shades of purple during the “One last thing” bit so close up!At this point Chris refused the offer of backing vocals & sat smiling at Dave everytime he looked over to see if Chris was gonna do a bit. An unexpected and welcome treat in ‘Exhausted’ was next up,man I love that song ,and have never seen it live before. Everyone sat there the whole time kind of mesmerised by the entire experience.Dave had announced that we could feel free to ‘freak out’,but it wasn’t really possible, sitting crossed legged on the floor with your arse growing more & more numb! Everlong was follwed by Floaty (which was sung an octave lower which made it interesting),Floaty,Learn to fly,Walking after you (it was beautiful).During the whole set,Nate just sat quiet & perfectly playing as ever. This is a call ended this unforgettable gig.
I sat in total disbelief at what I had just been a part of.The day before , I had been sitting in a wet & windy Glasgow,Scotland…and today I had just seen Dave Grohl(the guy I’ve listened to constantly for the last 10 years or so) play a ‘private’ concert no more than 2 feet away from me! WTF!!!! The only way I can think to describe it is:Coming down to your living room one day & there before you is the Foos playing a gig! IT WAS THAT INTIMATE! After they had played, they went out for about 10 mins then came back in to sign "All our shit" as the woman put it! I headed straight for Taylor, with my Glasgow Green drumstick in my hand! I asked him so sign it & he was well impressed that I had the stick. Then to Nate....he was nice too & did the signing & photo bit for Irene & me. Then to Chris....same as Nate, nice guy, signing & photos. Then to Dave....just as we approached him,a woman said that the band would have to leave now!Irene yells"Hey Dave !you ain't going nowhere !We have came all the way from Scotland for this!" Dave says "Well come over here & I'll sign & get photos with you guys!"YIPEE! He talked to us for a good 10 mins, telling us ( and everyone else who was around)that the Barrowlands Glasgow is THEE best gig ever,"the crowd REALLY go off there like nowhere else in the world!" We talked about The Exploited & Big John Duncan & his Nirvana days etc.....Christ he is a REALLY nice guy.Not in the least bit 'rock starry'. The funny thing was, each time we approached one of the Foos ,they each said "Wow!You are the Scottish guys right?"That was really weird ,the Foo knowing who we were! As they were leaving,Nate came over & said"Thanx for coming all this way to see us do a 1hr set, thats amazing!" They left and then we all filtered out. We saw Taylor down a corridor, doing a press thing I guess, and as we passed,he whistled us and said"Bye guys, enjoy the rest of your trip!
"We then drove down to Malibu for some munchies. We stopped at a red light about 10 miles away, and in the next lane Taylor pulls up in his red pick up truck!(see L.A pics for picture) Suzy,in the front, shouts "hiya Taylor,he smiles & shout hi back!" He looks to the back seat of our car(where I am sitting) and says "Hey !Its the Scottish guys!Did you enjoy today?" We of course say it was great, the lights go green,he waves and says “ see ya guys”,and off he goes. So all in all it was a fuckin amazing day we had just got to meet the Foos! Well that's about it, sorry these roadnotes  are soo long but there was soooo much to tell, and there is probably more that I've forgotten in my Valium haze!
