CYCLONE RIDE ARMOR

The Cyclone is definitely the most innovative design in multiform mecha since the renovation of the SDF-1. The most recent series of wars, beginning with the Gulf War in 1991 and continuing through the global civil wars through the next decade taught the military high commands that basic infantry units suffered great liabilities: they were relatively slow compared to armor and mecha, and they were too vulnerable to even the smallest weapons. Though the RDF tried to improve upon the latter problem, the clunky CVR-1 body armor was hot and immobile. The UEEF and the ASC pushed forward with the CVR-2 flexi-armor, a tremendous improvement on CVR-1, but still suffered from low mobility, and somewhat clunkiness. Although this body armor filled numerous roles and increased the overall survivability of the average foot soldier, it became apparent that a man-sized mecha would be of invaluable use to the infantryman, as would a personal vehicle. Dr. Emil Lang fulfilled this desire with the Cyclone, a Veritech motorcycle that attached itself to a new style of body armor, CVR-3. Adopted by the UEEF as the primary infantry vehicle, and as security mecha and an emergency vehicle for downed pilots, this small, nimble mecha has seen service on hundreds of worlds and all theaters of engagement. The Cyclone is a tough, durable piece of hardware that maximizes the versatility, survivability, and combat effectiveness of an individual soldier. The weapons systems are modular, accurate, and flexible, and the motorcycle mode is unmatched in its role.
Since their arrival in the Three Galaxies, Pheonix Unlimited has been working to upgrade their existing vehicles and weapons to perform equal to or better than their equivalent 3Gs mecha. In doing so, the venerable Cyclone has also had several upgrades from the original UEEF models. All models have been upgraded with a CG Grav Pack, complete with fusion power system, and a tied in Naruni N-20B Medium Force Field. The Grav Pack replaces the original battery/liquid fuel backup power system, and quadruples the life span of the Protoculture fuel cell, which still provides the link needed for the Cyclone's exceptional combat abilities. The N-20B Force Field provides additional protection for the mecha and their pilots. One final update is that all electronics have been upgraded to 3Gs standards.

BACKGROUND

One of the older Cyclone designs developed for the UEEF, the -030 series was originally designed to be a more lightly armored and faster mecha than the general issue counterpart. A successful design, it saw numerous variants, culminating with the -038 version. This mecha soldiered on throughout the 2030s and into the 3rd Robotech War, where it served with scouts, anti-armor specialists, and forward observers.
Pheonix Unlimited exclusively uses the VR-038R variant of the Recon Cyclone. This version comes with all of the features of that model, plus the upgrades Pheonix Unlimited has made to all of its Cyclones.

Unlike the quick strike "hit and run" tactics that exemplified the abilities of its -030 predecessor, the -040 series Cyclone was designed to get its hands dirty in frontline heavy duty combat roles. The -040 series packed a lot of firepower in its two weapons pods that would mount on the "chest" of the ride armor battloid-mode. The -040 series is unique amongst its fellow Cyclones with its distinctive ceramic blades fitted to the forearm guard front wheel covers. The strong, lightweight sabers were developed to pierce Invid armor and hive walls, but are also incredibly lethal weapons in close combat.
While Pheonix Unlimited uses the standard VR-041H Saber almost exclusively, they do have 6 of the Field Medic Cyclone models. All VR-041M and most VR-041H models have the upgrades standard to all Pheonix Unlimited Cyclones, plus have been specially modified to have their operational sounds muffled, giving them the ability to Prowl (with no penalties). A select group of "Special Forces" VR-041P Sabers have had the Naruni Forcefield switched out for a P/O-P Variable Phase Field, that allows the field to alternate between Defensive Mode and Out-of-Phase Mode.

The VR-050 series of Cyclones is by far the most numerous, and has the most variations of any of the Cyclone models. The base model of the design actually consisted of five submodels. The VR-051 variant has the VR-041's missile launchers in addition to the weapons mounted/carried on their forearm(s). While these were the main-line combat models for a few years, they were eventually replaced by the less expensive, but better armored VR-52 "F" and "T" variants [Described in the Robotech: Shadow Chronicles RPG].
Pheonix Unlimited pretty much uses the VR-052 models for their ground troops and in their Alphas and Betas as emergency vehicles. The VR-051 model is pretty much used exclusively by a few special Teams within Pheonix Unlimited. (Namely, the Player Group. There are roughly 2 VR-051s for each player, for a total of at the most 22 left.) All of the VR-052s have been upgraded with the new equipment. The VR-051s have not been upgraded yet.

In late 2032, a new Cyclone was unveiled - the VR-055 Devastator. Though it was far more costly and difficult to produce than even the Sabre, the VR-055 lived up to its name. Coupled with the new style external weapons package and sporting a modified CVR helmet, the Devastator had the equivalent firepower of an entire squad of Battler Cyclones. Unfortunately, there were problems with the two largest guns that took several years to resolve and added to the problem of its enormous cost of manufacture. Consequently, they were phased out in favor of the newer, less expensive, VR-057 Super Cyclone, and no more than a hundred VR-055 Devastators were ever built.
There are currently only 3 VR-055s in possession of Pheonix Unlimited, and they are all controlled by Major Phineous Lockley. Each is individually customized, with each in various stages of having been upgraded with the new systems.

A passenger can also ride seated behind the driver. Cyclones can carry 250 lbs (140 kg) in addition to the rider. Reduce maximum speed by 20% for every additional 50 lbs (22 kg) over the limit and add -1 to dodge. One storage box can hold 12 mini-missiles (~24lbs).
Main Engine: 1190cc Protoculture Fired Rotary Engine
Range:
1 protoculture cell will power the cyclone for approximately 1 month before needing refueling. Constant combat will drain the protoculture cell twice as quickly. As a backup, the cyclone can run on battery power alone for up to 2 hours, but maximum speed is reduced 25% and flying is impossible.
Pheonix Unlimited Update: Pheonix's version of the Cyclone is powered by a tandem power system. All major power requirements of the mecha are provided by the fusion power pack, while the Protoculture system still provides the man-machine link needed for the Cyclone's exceptional agility. This reduced strain on the Protoculture systems extends the average cell life to more than 4 months before a replacement is needed. The fusion power pack has a life of roughly 10 years.

ENERGY WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. EP-37 60MM HAND-HELD PARTICLE BEAM GUN: The EP-37 is capable of firing either single shots or five round bursts. It is highly accurate, giving a +1 bonus to strike.
  2. EP-40 ION PISTOL: The EP-40 is the standard issue weapon for VR-50 series Cyclones. The weapon is powered by a protoculture energy clip that holds 110 shots. An advanced targeting camera is mounted on the top front of the EP-40 that links directly to the targeting computer of the cyclone.

  3. M_100.gif (28698 bytes)M-100: Used for anti-personnel missions against lightly or unarmored targets. The M-100 uses two magazines both of which have a 100 round capacity. Like the EP-40, the M-100 has an advanced targeting camera which links with the cyclone's main weapon system providing it with a higher probability of striking.

  4. mars_gallant.jpg (21156 bytes)MARS GALLANT H-90 PARTICLE BEAM GUN:

  5. H-260 VALIANT LASER ASSAULT RIFLE:  The Valiant is a new laser rifle that is being phased in to replace the aging EP-37 as the weapon of choice for Cyclone riders. It is powered by a Protoculture clip, but can be swapped out for a standard e-clip.

MISSILE WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. GR-10 TRIPLE-TUBE ROCKET-PROPELLED GRENADE LAUNCHERS: A GR-10 is mounted on each leg of the Devastator cyclone.  Each holds three Recluse Plasma mini-missiles which are guided by the Cyclones' internal weapon systems.
  2. GR-97: Two Scorpion HEAP (High Explosive Armor Piercing) missiles are mounted in each launcher.
  3. GR-103: Two GR-103s are mounted internally on the VR-041 and VR-051 Cyclones. Each launcher can hold 6 Recluse mini-missiles.
  4. RL-6 HAND HELD ROCKET LAUNCHER: The RL-6 fires Scorpion mini-missiles. Each RL-6 has a payload of 6 missiles and can fire all in one volley.

MAJOR PHINEOUS LOCKLEY VR-055 DEVASTATOR SPECIAL:

Major Lockley has been heavily modifying his VR-055s since he arrived in the Three Galaxies. The only original VR-055 system that he still has on his Devastators is the GR-10 missile launcher mounted on his right leg. All sensor systems have been upgraded to Phase World standard and he has already installed the CG Grav Pack standard for all other Pheonix Unlimited Cyclones. His current modifications include all of the following noted systems and changes he has made and paid for out of his own pocket.
  1. CADS-2, COMBINATION VIBRO/PHASE SWORD (2): These are standard CADS housings that have been specially modified to carry the mechanisms for both Vibro-Swords and Phase Swords. By flipping a control switch, the user can alternate between either Vibro mode or Phase mode. Both can't be used at the same time. While in Phase Mode, the blade and housing does not have the special regenerating forcefield protecting it.

  2. DUAL V-81 VOLCANO MARK-I PLASMA DISCHARGER: These are two Mark-I Volcano Rifles mounted in the casing of the original EP-41R Pulse Cannon.

  3. NE-28R MICRO-MISSILE WRIST LAUNCHERS (2): Because the CADS-2 uses the Devastator's arm mounts and he had to lose one of the GR-10s for his Large Sword, Phineous decided to use these Naruni Micro-Missile Launchers to fill the missile gap. He only uses the Smart Armor Piercing Micro-Missiles and carries a pouch load of extra missiles inside his right thigh armor.

  4. K-1000 SPIDER DEFENSE SYSTEM: A long time ago, Major Phineous had a run in with a Spider Defense System. After beating it, he salvaged what he could and rebuilt it. That over all experience made him fall in love with the K-1000 Spider System. While that original Spider was later lost in combat, he has since purchased or acquired 6 more and have modified them as follows. When in motorcycle mode, he has his Spider mounted as a passenger behind him, able to fire over his head. When in soldier mode, Phineous either carries it, or usually just lets it follow him in independent mode. It can follow either scrambled radio instructions from Phineous, or operate using the Combat AI.

  5. HOLOGRAPHIC CAMERA SYSTEM: This is a full holographic camera system that uses components off the shelf from the Phase World equivalent of Sharper Image. As such it is barely 1/5th of the size of the original system, is mounted unobtrusively on the left shoulder of Phineous' VR-055, and is powered by the suit. Besides the recording of video and still images, the system can also print out hardcopy photos and display images in a holographic field.
