Amber Hensley, Springfield, OR Amber's life was changed dramatically May 21, 1998, when Kip Kinkel bumped into her in the hallway at Thurston High. Amber's life was spared only by seconds, narrowly escaping gunfire that filled the breezeway. She ran to a fallen young man, holding him briefly. This young man, Ben Walker, did not survive. She was pulled away by a friend who led her to a classroom. She was locked down for several hours and reunited with her mother, who was waiting outside the school when the shots began. Amber's lifethe way she sleeps, the way she eats, the way she lives, has been changed by this event. As a part of her healing, Amber took part in the 12 Stops of Christmas, which raised funds for the new Columbine Library. She has become involved with Ribbon of Promise as a volunteer. She traveled to California this January to speak at Safe Start 2000, a 2 day seminar for educators that focused on school safety. Amber's willingness to share her experiences with others shows tremendous courage. We appreciate her coming speaking out in an effort to prevent others from living the same heartache she has lived.
