Jonesboro
FOR OUR DAUGHTERS
by Mike C.

There always must come such a time in our lives
When we must accept evil with good
And in life every day, as we live and we pray
It seems so unfair that we should

And so it would seem as we mull the events
Of that Tuesday in March '98
Why our daughters who never did anyone harm
Should be lost to a horrible fate

We know as we lose such young ones that we love
Whether accident, evil, or cancer
No matter how much we ask why it must be
There's never a comforting answer

To the families of Stephanie, Britthney, Paige
And Natalie it should be known
That all of us parents are sharing their grief
And they are not crying alone

And then there are feelings we share for a teacher
And this is where there are no maybes
That Shannon Wright was one who guided their lives
And thought of them all as her babies

And so when she saw children in harm's way
There wasn't a need to think twice
She acted as any good mother would do
But made the supreme sacrifice

They say there angels among us and now
We know there was one on that day
And it seems so unfair they should bring so much joy
And so quickly be taken away

So Mitchell Wright, please, as you raise your young son
And remember your wonderful wife
Perhaps you can take consolation in thoughts
That she gave for a younger one's life

And now while we think of those evil young boys
And how they should pay for the deed
Perhaps we should realize that we are good souls
But judgment is what we should heed

One recalls a scene Jimmy Stewart once played
Shenandoah, the great movie show
Where he watched his son shot by a rebel and die
Then sought his revenge with one blow

But when he looked in the man's terrified eyes
And drew back his fist in a rage
He said, I won't kill you and end your days here
I hope that you live to old age!

I hope that you someday will raise a young son
Remembering your deed today
And when you've a family, the love of your life
Will have it all taken away

And so it will be here with Mitchell and Drew
That they should not meet early ends
But live with the guilt that in one thoughtless act
They tore out the hearts of their friends

And as they mature they will realize the depth
Of the evil they wrought in this City
Wherever they go, there will be those who know
And the one thing they won't find is pity

Instead of the lives of two growing young men
Who learn and play sports and drive cars
They chose by their inhuman deed on that day
To spend their young years behind bars

There is not much doubt that for what they have done
They'll pay a huge price, true to tell
And so while our daughters are angels in heaven
Those boys' lives on earth will be hell

So here, from two parents who live far away
We share in the loss that you bear
And hope that you know although we've not met
There's no doubt in your mind that we care

We hope that our sharing will help you along
As you start the road back to your lives
And know that we do this for all of our loved ones
Our mothers, our daughters, our wives.
