So while surfing around the other day, someone on a MB I visit makes mention to a beta version of Nullsoft’s new WINAMP5. Curious guy I am, and Winamp supporter, I download a copy of it (god love free commerce) and its pretty kicking.

Winamp5 is Nullsoft’s answer to Music match (MM from here out); see, as MM has the ability to tap into Internet radio with pretty damn good sound. But why listen to radio when you can have all the songs you like right they’re on your mp3 player?

But the feature on Winamp5 that really got me was the ability to tune into shows being broadcast over the Internet. Though these shows are very slim, it quite interesting. Most of them are channels that show music videos, but thankfully not all the same ones There are a few Radiohead video channels, which is ok they have sweet videos, and one that shows nothing but (I’m guessing the owner of said channel) “Cool Videos”, in other words, videos our beloved MuchMusic never shows on TV. So lots of Aphex Twin, Bjork, foreign videos, any video that causes you to actually pay attention.

And of course, you do have your obligatory porn channels, which never seem to work. Some guy trying to stream movies (He had Terminator 3 going the other day!), some peeps streaming Simpsons, Futrama, Family Guy and to my amazement... INVADER ZIM!! Though the Invader Zim channel was seriously lagging. Zim is one of the greatest cartoons never seen.

I am quite impressed with Winamp5 iTV, but lets hope some more people start to get interested in it. I think somewhere down the line, Grayscale might be able to take advantage of this medium to stream they’re own videos, commentary and whatnot. Maybe have our own station, showing whatever pleases us.
