S-400 LMR Airplanes

In 2002 some SAM 8 members started flying electric powered airplanes, both RC and FF. It was suggested that we start a S-400 RC event in the spirit of the 1/2A Texaco RC event.

We started by applying the SAM electric rule of that period to the 1/2A Texaco event. We replaced the .049 reed valve engine with a S-400 brushed motor. We limited the batteries to NiCd and were flying with a 8 cell 350mah battery pack.

In 2008 we changed to the 2008 SAM electric battery rules.

In 2009 we decided to allow members with airplanes that were made for the NEW SAM S-400 event to fly with us using the LMR time defined by the SAM rules. We use the old 90 second LMR rule for airplanes that have geared motors. We also changed the weight rule to 16 ounce minimum weight.

We have been considering flying an eTexaco event using a 2 cell 400mah LiPo.

S-400 Scale Airplanes

Gene Everson wanted to create a SAM EPRC event for scale airplanes. We elected to do this with S-400 size airplanes but not limiting the motors to brushed S-400 motors. This is supposed to be a "LOW DOC" scale event. Minimum documentation and judging. Does it look like the photo or 3 View? That's good enough.

Peewee 280 LMR Airplanes

This began as an effort to create an electric version of the .020 Peewee event. We built a few Peewee airplanes with S-280 motors and a 6X100 NiCd battery pack. We found these airplanes would fly OK as free flights but the addition of 1oz of radio gear was just too much. They would fly for a short time on an 8X110 NiCd with radio but would not go very high and they came dound pretty fast.

Recently  we have tried using a 2 cell LiPo. This made all the difference in the world. Now they are flying like their S-400 big brothers.
