Philip II commissioned this painting when Titian was 77 years old. It embodies the myth of Jupiter being converted into a shower of gold in order to visit Venus in her bedroom. Danae´s body appears in the foreground, naked and lying on a bed. Her legs are open and bent, her hands resting on the pillow, and her thigh and head slightly tilted. Opposite her, in open contrast, the maid is dressed and at the edge of the light tries to catch the rain in her apron. In the time of Charles III, it was proposed to burn the picture because of its highly erotic content. However, the Academy of St. Fernando saved it and included it in one of its reserved halls. | |||||||
