Defying Destiny prologue
~*~*~*~*~*~
"I'll come back to you. I promise..." the Chinese man whispered as he bent
down to gently kiss his lover. The other man broke the kiss, shaking his
head. "You don't know that! God knows what could happen to you out there! I
don't--" "You know I have to go...There's a war raging out there....I can't
just stand here and let it happen...let the enemy destroy our country...our
home...I don't want you to be in danger. Your safety is too precious to me to
let that happen." "I don't *care* about my safety! I--" "But *I* do. That is
why I have to fight. Please....let me go....willingly. I don't want my last
vision of you before I leave to be like this....worried and upset. Please
smile, itooshi, if not for yourself then for me." And so, he smiled, easily
slipping back into his old mask. Seeing
this, the Chinese warrior smiled also, "Thank you. That is all I'll need, all
I will ever need." He bent down and embraced his lover, gently kissing him
once again. He then planted a kiss on the sleeping form in the crib and left.

His fake smile faded as he felt tears leak onto his cheeks. Wiping them away,
he turned to look at the child in the crib. They had just adopted the girl a
month ago. He walked towards her and brushed her bangs away from her peaceful
sleeping face. Shi Wei Nu [2]. That was what they decided to named her, after
KaiHui traits. The name ment dominant and powerful, to guard, protect, and
defend. His husband wanted to give her a more feminine name but he had
insisted on this one. Nothing could be more fitting. Fingering his chestnut
braid he thought.

After a month, a messenger arrived at his doorstep, delivering news for the
war. Shi KaiHui was dead. He had whispered, "I'm sorry....I'm sorry I broke
my promise....Forgive me....Wo ai ni..." with his dying breath.

One week later, Shi Kaihui's husband's body was found. Lying dead in front of
their child, who was sitting on a stool, blindfolded [2].

~*~*~*~*~*~*

Duo woke up with a start, cold sweat matting his bangs to his forehead. That
was all a dream......but it seemed so real....It took him a few minutes to
recollect himself. That was only a dream....true...but this was reality.
Chang Wufei was dead.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

[1] Shi Wei Nu...*snicker* that was actually one of the names I had when I
translated my name to Chinese. And that *is* what it means....

[2] I dunno....I think that's what happened in Madama Butterfly. I think it
was some kind of ritual, the only form of suicide that preserved honor in the
family. Nifty, ne?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Um....just in case you're confused....Shi Kaihui (which means triumph,
victory, brilliance) was Wufei and since I couldn't think of a fitting name
for Duo I didn't give him one...*sweatdrop* Sorry I confused you guys a bit
the dream is needed for future use...
Defying Destiny 1/?
~*~*~*~*~*~*
Just a dream. Another dream. They had been haunting his sleep every night for
a month....ever since.....They were always the same.....always about him and
Wufei. Always them being lovers.....And they always ended the same. With
Wufei dead. And sometimes him dying along with him. And yet they were
different. Different time, different place. Different names, different
surroundings. Everything else was different....but they always went along the
same line. They were in love, and then Wufei would die saving
him....separating them once again. It seemed so close to reality....so close
to what had happened a month ago......Duo could still remember it so
clearly...as if it had only happened a moment before.....
******
"Fuck! They knew! They some how found out that we were coming!"
"Oh, I'm glad you figured that out, genius. Now what do we do?!"
The Chinese pilot shot a glare at Duo but didn't reply. This was *not* a good
time to start arguing. They were surrounded by at least 100 mobile dolls, too
many to possibly destroy and still escape with the information they had
acquired. Destroying them wasn't the problem, still having time to escape
after doing so, was. These dolls were nothing but something to stall them
until OZ got their half way decent mobile suits out there.
Wufei thought quickly as he used his dragon fire to kill 5 more mobile dolls.
"Duo! You go first, I'll finish this up." "Nani?! Are you crazy?! You'll get
killed! I will not--" "Would you just listen to me for once, Maxwell?! One of
us has to get out of here with the blue prints! We have to complete the
mission--" "I don't *care* about the mission! What's important is for both of
us to get out of here alive--" "Duo....I'll come out of here alive...I
promise...." "You don't know that! There are too many of them for you to--"
"You know I have to do this....You have to go...If you stay, both of us will
die...then the whole mission will be--" "I told you already, I don't care
about the fucking blue prints or the fucking mission--" "It's not about the
mission. It's who we're doing this for. Please, Duo, even if you don't do it
for yourself, do it for the colonies...for me." Duo looked into Wufei's eyes
through the monitor....they held a pleading look that he just couldn't
resist. Giving a reluctant nod, he started running away from the scene. Wufei
killed all the dolls that started to follow Deathscythe.
Once he was safely outside, he turned back, looking at the monitor once
again. He saw Wufei give him small sad smile, "Thank you, Duo. For
everything....You...you were always the light of our group, saving us from
insanity. I'm sorry...I can't keep my promise. That would endanger your life,
I can't let that happen. Forgive me. I am honored to have worked with you the
short time we have known eachother. Goodbye, Duo Maxwell. For the last
time...." The connection was ended. Duo's eyes widened. "No! No!! You can't
do this to me, Chang! You can't! No!! It's not honorable to break promises,
you know that!!! No! Wufei!!" He tried to restart the connection, slamming
his fist at the empty monitor, desperate to get the connection back.
Within moments, it happened. Shenlong self-destructed, destroying all the
mobile dolls, making sure that they couldn't endanger the pilot of
Deathscythe's life. And killing it's pilot in the process.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That was when he knew, when he realized. As he watched the brilliant flames
rise high and engulf the building, burning everything away as if it were
nothing. As bittersweet memories of the Chinese pilot flashed through his
mind, ones where the boy truly showed himself, the man behind the mask. When
he gave rare, beautiful smiles, when he showed a gentleness that seemed
impossible for the Solitary Dragon, when he showed he had a sense of humor, a
rather dry one, but a sense of humor none the less. And now......all of that
was gone. There was nothing left of him except beautiful memories that just
made Duo long for more....made him wish that he could have dug deeper behind
the mask, made him think that maybe if he had tried a bit harder to uncover
this jewel, this treasure....that maybe he would still be alive. *That* was
when he realized.....He had fallen in love with the pilot of Shenlong.

Duo had cried, then. Why was it always like this? Why didn't people ever seem
to realize how much they would miss something....someone, how much that
someone ment to them until they were gone, until it was too late? The war had
taken everything from him. His family, his life, and now it had gone and
taken the one person Duo had managed to love after the church was destroyed.
Fuck OZ, screw the war. Why couldn't he just be a normal teenager for once?!
He was fifteen for God's sake! He should have been stressing over too much
homework at this age! So why did he have to fight this war? Why did fate have
to be so cruel as to tear everything away from him? Why did the war have to
force them to live in eternal damnation?

Sometimes....sometimes...it was all too much. Sometimes, when the war, the
responsibility, his guilt, his loneliness, his own facade....when everything
just came crashing down on him...When everything became too overwhelming for
the fifteen year old he truly was to handle, when the weight on his shoulders
became too much for him hold, he just....broke. He would feel like running
away from everything, his whole facade, his guilt, the other pilots, the war.
But he knew he couldn't. The colonies needed him, that was his duty, to
protect them. And so, he lost himself to the heat of the battle. Killing
mercilessly, not caring who it was, as long it was an enemy.

But he knew he couldn't do that for long. Sooner or later....there would be
no enemy. What of him then? What was the use of a soldier after battle?
Nothing. There *was* no use for a soldier after battle. But until then....he
would fight...for the colonies.

Wufei's death had destroyed this belief. The battle had lost it's meaning. He
started to lose hold of the reason why he fought. He broke down every time he
woke up from the horrifying dreams that wouldn't let him forget about Wufei's
death. He could feel tears start to burn their way down his cheeks. Just when
he thought he was all cried out, he would feel them again. All he could think
about, wonder about was...Why? Why did Wufei have to die? Why did he have to
leave him....

He curled up as he sobbed into his arms. He was so cold and lonely. He had
known this feeling all his life, but now it just seemed to have magnified one
hundred times.

Suddenly, he could feel warm arms wrap gently around his shoulders, the touch
as light as a ghost's. "Shh...Don't cry...The death was not worthy of your
tears, Maxwell....." came a barely audible whisper.

That voice. That name...only one person ever called him by that name. He
turned his head slightly up and saw.....A raven haired angel.....

See? Didn't I say things wouldn't turn out that bad?
Ack...so.....sleepy.....Oyasumi nasai, minna........*head crashes onto
keyboard and immediately falls asleep*
