"The Interesting Week: Part 4"

Thursday: Quatre: The opera

"I've never been to the opera before," Duo stated.

He was clearly uncomfortable with the idea. Getting dressed up with a bunch of music lovers was not the first thing on his 'to do' list. He knew Heero would agree with him on this one.

"It'll be great. The story is so romantic-but sad!" Quatre warned.

"If you say so," Duo said dubiously.

"Think you'll be able to keep your mouth shut for two and a half hours, Duo?" Wufei smirked. Duo stuck out his tongue.

All five of them had to get dressed for the occasion. Duo admitted he didn't know the first thing about opera etiquette, so Quatre said he would help him.

He groaned out loud when he saw the suit, but was quickly silenced by a look from Trowa, of all people.

"Don't spoil this for Quatre." he said softly.

"This sucks," Duo mumbled under his breath.

This whole week had been a disaster. First a library, than a paintball camp, oh, the circus had been tolerable, but Duo wanted some action.

Quatre helped Duo get dressed, and when he was finished, he sighed.

"Duo, you look so handsome!"

Duo looked at himself in the mirror.

He felt like one of Relena's goons from the Cinq Kingdom. Suddenly he felt very sorry for them.

Heero and Wufei walked in the room, and Duo's breath caught. They looked...

Absolutely ridiculous.

He burst into laughter, until tears were rolling down his face.

"Shut up, Maxwell!" hissed a furious Wufei.

Heero chose to ignore the laughing hyena. Besides, this suit *was* uncomfortable for the boy perpetually clad in spandex and cotton.

"Let's go!" clapped Quatre.

The opera house was crowded. Tonight they were seeing "La Boheme", by Puccini.(1)

Duo sat next to Heero and sighed. He *did* look cute tonight in that suit. Heero caught him staring and Duo blushed. Heero confounded him sometimes. He was always sending mixed signals.

The opera began, and Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei became immersed in it. Duo found the costumes and scenery pretty spectacular, but the music just wasn't his style. Plus, if you wanted to understand *what* they were singing about, you had to read the translation on a screen. This just wasn't his cup of tea.

Especially when he had a gorgeous pilot next to him who was growing fidgety. Heero began cracking his knuckles, and Duo laughed silently. 'I feel your pain, Heero' he thought to himself.

In an effort to (quietly) stop Heero, Duo slowly took Heero's hand into his and gently squeezed. True, he wanted Heero to stop, but this was also an excuse to touch him.

The look Heero gave him made him snatch his hand away instantly. He looked over at Quatre and Trowa, who for once weren't attached at the lips. Must have been for public's sake.

Duo grew agitated as he tried to concentrate on the opera. Then, all of a sudden, he felt a warm, callused hand take his. Duo's heart stopped.

'Oh my God' he thought.

Heero laced his fingers through Duo's and looked him straight in the eye. Duo stared back, and slowly began to relax. Wufei, seated between the couples, glanced at Heero and Duo. Startled, he almost jumped out of his seat.

'Great,' he cursed inwardly. 'It's bad enough Trowa and Quatre are perpetually attached, but now Heero is returning Duo's affection?' He felt like crying to his Nataku.

Heero squeezed Duo's hand, and the two watched in the opera in earnest. On the stage, two lovers were singing to each other. The song was sweet, yet sad. In the audience, one couple was aware of the love they shared, while another was reveling in the beginnings of it.

1) I am going to see "La Boheme" at the Metropolitan Opera House this Friday, and I think it is one of the best. Imagine that? A NIN fan and an opera fan. It is beautiful, though! I highly recommend it!

Well, Duo's day is coming up. What does our beautiful Shinigami have planned?

Duo: just wait and see, chicky.

Heero: Better not be anything stupid.

Duo: oh shut up! You'll *love* it, and you know it.

Heero: Hn.

Jezebel: Boys, boys. Calm down.
