The Hobgoblin
First appearance: (As Roderick Kingsley) Spectacular Spider-Man #43; (As Hobgoblin) Amazing Spider-Man #238

See Roderick Kingsley.

The mystery regarding the original Hobgoblin has haunted Spider-Man since the Hobgoblin's debut. Peter Parker, his Aunt May and Nathan Lubinsky were nearly struck by a car leaving a robbery, one cold March afternoon. Peter then went after the thugs as Spider-Man, catching all but one of them. The thug fled into the sewer, and Spider-Man decided to let him go rather than having to run after him. The thug later stumbled upon a secret hideout belonging to Norman Osborn, The Green Goblin! The thug, Georgie, then told someone he felt would be interested by finding the Goblin garb, only to be later killed by the mysterious person. The mystery man then became...The Hobgoblin!

The Hobgoblin set off to finish what Osborn started, the destruction of Spider-Man, only to be handed a bitter defeat. After a short while during a fight between the Hobgoblin and Spider-Man, it appeared that the Hobgoblin had been defeated, as all Spider-Man found left of him was his mask. Hobgoblin survived and struck back at Spider-Man with a vengeance.

A while later Hobgoblin gained super strength, causing him to more of a threat. However the original Hobgoblin was apparently defeated as Peter Parker and Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds went to Berlin to pursue a story. It was there that Ned was brutally murdered and was revealed to be the Hobgoblin. Jason Macendale, the Jack O' Lantern, donned the garb of the Hobgoblin after Leeds death to become the second Hobgoblin. The biggest trauma caused by Leeds death was that felt by his widow, Betty, who believed long after Ned's death that he was still alive.

All seemed well with every one as the mystery of the Hobgoblin had been revealed. But just as Macendale was being escorted to prison he admitted to a crowd of hundreds that Leeds was the Hobgoblin. However, that night Macendale was murdered by the original Hobgoblin, back from the dead! After killing industrialist George Vandergill, the Hobgoblin was revealed to be Roderick Kingsley. This news, and the clearing of Ned's name left both Betty and Peter feeling better. Kingsley was held at the Iron Rock penitentiary, until his learning of Norman Osborn's recent return. Kingsley then hatched a plan to have Osborn spring him jail, claiming to have one of the apparently destroyed journals naming Osborn the Green Goblin. After a fight involoving Osborn, Kingsley, the new Green Goblin and Spider-Man, Kingsley fled to the island of Isla Suerte, after signing over Kingsley International to Osborn.
