Joe Silvermane
First appearance: Daredevil #118

See Joe's alter-ego, Blackwing.

The ambitious son of Maggia leader Silvio "Silvermane" Manfredi, Joe SIlvermane has long been trying to move out of his father's vast shadow, with limited success. After his fathers apparent demise, Joe turned to costumed crime as Blackwing and allied himself with the terrorist organization Hydra, a group that the elder Silvermane became the leader of upon his return. With his father as the Surpreme Hydra and Joe gaining a level of respect from his battles with the costumed hero Daredevil, Joe seemed to be on the fast track to success, until Hydras plans were shut down by Daredevil and Joe was imprisoned. While Silvermane continued his reign of power in the Maggia, Joe remained behind the scenes, even while his father's regained youth was lost and his frail body put into a cyborg form. Joe did not resurface until an allience was formed between himself and the new Jack O' Lantern, who would much later encounter Spider-Man on a recurring basis. Redonning the suit of Blackwing, Joe and the Jack O'l Lantern fought Captain America and were both defeated. Blackwing would again encounter Captain America later, and again would be defeated.

Frustrated by his continual defeats and inability to impress his father, Joe joined a group of other costumed villains hoping to make a mark on the world. Led by the Crimson Cowl, this new Masters of Evil, consisting of twenty-five villains, sought to harness the Earth's weather for their own evil means, but their plans were soundly stopped by the reformed villain team, the Thunderbolts and once again, Joe was sent to prison. Refocusing his efforts towards the Maggia and less towards his own pursuits, Joe abandoned the identity of Blackwing and set up his own syndicate within the Maggia. Selling weapons to street youths, and setting up a mercenary group called "Heavy Mettle" (of which there was a new, female Blackwing) were two of Joe's first actions, as was having a member of Heavy Mettle named Firestrike to, in his civilian identity of police officer Dalton Beck, get close to New Warriors member Turbo and take her special armored suit. Dalton grew fond of Turbo though from their time spent together, and went against Heavy Mettle in the end, helping Turbo. Dalton later testified against Joe in court, but had to be placed in the witness protection program to escape Joe's vengeance.

It has not been revealed if the testimony given against Joe has had any effect on his growing criminal empire within the Maggia.

Powers and Abilities: Joe Silvermane is a skilled fighter and a brillient mastermind. His power as a crime boss continues to grow, though his attempts to impress and please his father is an unfortunate weakness.
