Webspinners: Tales Of Spider-Man #7 (May 1999)
Kelly Sears Smith Pennington

Webspinners #7 the plot: It begins with a glimpse into the lives of Peter Parker, Liz Allen, Betty Brant and the Sandman as they all prepare for the fateful day yet to come. Peter, now at Midtown High, makes his way to his locker in these, his last days of high school. Liz Allen arrives to see Peter, trying to plan a study meet between them. Their conversation is interrupted though when a friend of bully Flash Thompson (who also happens to be Liz's boyfriend) throws a football at Peter. Unable to react, lest he reveal his spider powers, Peter takes the hit to the back of his head. Peter's work to get a science grant into ESU doesn't seem to be paying off either of him, since his rival for the scholarship, Blake, whose father has hired people to do Blake's project, is relaxing while Peter is working night and day on his experiment, muttering his frustration by always having to life by the rules.

Peter, still very much rattled by the scene with Blake in the science lab, makes an unsettling remark to Betty Brant while she gives him a ride in her car, and his kicked out of her car. Then there's the prom, which Peter has completely forgotten aboutnot wanting to have to spend a couple hundred dollars to watch his high school tormenters have a good time in tuxedos. Meanwhile the Sandman also shares Peter frustration of his routine and decides to take a cue from "Merc Monthly" magazine and take up a new career. The next day at school Peter at last has something go right for him when he finally perfects his adhesive project to get the grant, though his joy his short lived when he sees his science teacher Mr. Del using Blake's virtual reality project and practically guarantee Blake the grant money. Distraught and disheartened, Peter's day continues to go wrong when Flash's friends plant a bucket of water in Peter's locker which splashes him and then Peter gets a detention slip for spilling water in the hallway. By this time Peter's had too much and he storms out of Midtown High.

Venting his frustration by putting on his Spidey suit, Peter runs into the Sandman, who's decided to try his hand at mercenary work. Not up for a confrontation, Spider-Man just throws the chemicals he was working on in the lab at the Sandman, stopping him in his tracks. The following day at school, Peter's a new man. He skips his appointment with Mr. Del, flirts with Liz and even asks her to the prom. And this time when Flash's buddies throw a football at the back of his head, he catches it. Though for all of Peter's good luck, the Sandman is not doing all that well. The chemicals had an odd reaction to him and now he's started to change and is in great pain. What will happen it Sandman gets out after Spidey? Sometime bad no doubt!
