Venom: The Madness #1 (September 1993)
Nocenti Jones Beatty

Venom: The Madness #1 review by justin anderson

the plot: Venom wakes from a nightmare as one of the homeless bums above is being attacked by two thugs. Rescuing his fellow citizen of the udnerground city, he meets Beck, a local attorney, who's working for the underground city. A corporation has spilled mercury into the local sewers, and Beck is putting a lot of pressure on. Scarmore orders a stop put to her, which means hiring the Juggernaut to kidnap her.

Eddie has a short date with Beck below, and he's finding himself attracted to her. But, his nightmares return that night. Somehting is calling to him. The next day, Juggernaut shows up for the kidnapping, only to tick Eddie off in the process. A rather nasty battle ensues, knocking both men into the sewers. Venom takes a beating, and ultimately falls into the water. This water is poisoned with a mutated mercury strain, which seems to be alive, speaking to him as he sinks.

the review: It's Venom vs Juggernaut, in the middle of a corporate pollution scandal. Kelley Jones copies Kyle Hotz's art style for this issue, fairly obvious during the nightmare scenes, and comes out a but surreal, in a good way.
