Get Kraven #1
(June 2002)
Zimmerman McCrea Hodgkins Rio Florea

Get Kraven #1 the plot: Fed up with the lackluster quality of movies today, Alyosha Kravinov, the son of the late Kraven the Hunter, decides to pack up and head on down the Hollywood to produce movies himself. Plus, the subplot of the apparent return of Sergei Kravinov is resolved, when it's revealed that Kraven the Hunter is actually the Chameleon in disguise.

If you like digs at Hollywood, this one's for you!

the review: Zimmerman, a much-lauded Marvel neophyte, injects the wafer-thin Alyosha Kravinov with great amounts of personality that seem to stem directly from his own. Sadly they seem trite and out of character. Not only that, but Spidey seems very out of character around Al, who he should be uneasy around, considering their entire history together is one of violence.

I liked Al Rio's artwork in the second story better than John McCrea's, but still thought the art was decent in the two of them.

I guess my main quibbles towards this book stem from Zimmerman's obvious interest in lampooning Hollywood in a way that only he gets the joke. it just doesn't work. Plus he spends so much time doing that, the rest of the story suffers as a result and is very weak. That doesn't bode well for the next five issues.

And am I the only guy seriously bothered by the fact that deceased Spidey foes Tarantula and Chameleon show up in this book, along with reformed enemy the Grizzly? And correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Cobra and Mr. Hyde hate each other?

I'm sure there's an audience for this book, but sadly I'm not it. *1/2 out of *****.
