Spider-Girl #49 (July 2002)
DeFalco Olliffe Williamson

Spider-Girl #49 the plot: While Alison Mongrain, the woman who kidnapped May Parker from her parents Peter and Mary Jane when she was a baby, remembers the past, the now-teenaged May Parker, better known as the Sensational Spider-Girl, recalls her recent fight with Kaine, a renegade clone. Peter Parker meanwhile is meeting with Johnny Storm and Reed Richards of the Fantastic Five about his bionic leg, so he can resume action as Spider-Man. Normie Osborn, the grandson of Norman Osborn, the original Green Goblin, forms a closer bond with Blackie Drago, the Raptor, who faces the possibility of jail time for her crimes. Spider-Girl meets with Darkdevil, who in his civilian identity is Blackie's lawyer, while more of Kaine's connection to Mongrain is revealed, and Peter Parker recounts his final battle with Norman Osborn during his "Gathering of Five", the fight that cost Peter his leg.

the review: I know I'm repeating myself, but I really enjoyed this issue of Spider-Girl.

You know why Spider-Girl remains to be such an enjoyable read. It has a strong supporting cast, that shows up regularly, and is given time to grow; it's got great villains, that aren't afraid to be a little goofy; and it's got a perfect mix of high-octane drama, with some truly remarkable sub-plots going on.

If all that weren't enough, the fact that Tom DeFalco, and Pat Olliffe are going back in Spider-Man history and retelling certain events to fit in with the established Spider-Girl history. This issue features a retelling of the "Gathering of Five" storyline, and in all fairness, it packs more of a punch than the real thing from a few years back. And to make Spider-Girl continuity come full circle, there's a quick panel flash of Martha "Mattie" Franklin running off with the shards from the Gathering ceremony, tieing into an earlier issue that revealed that Mattie did become a Spider-Woman in MC2 continuity!

And the artwork? The artwork is incredible, highlighted and looking fabulous courtesy of Udon Studios. This issue is a lead in to Spider-Girl's 50th anniversary issue, so pick this up and then get the next one. Spider-Girl #49 gets ***1/2 out of *****.
