The Sin-Eater
First appearance: Spectacular Spider-Man #107

The Sin-Eater was an insane vigilante who took the law into his own hands, murdering those he felt worked with the evils of society. First taking the life of Spider-Man associate police officer Jean DeWolff, the Sin-Eater then went after Matt Murdock, better known as the adventurer Dardevil, who had just earlier gotten two criminals exonerated of crimes. Peter Parker, having caught the criminals as Spider-Man, was furious at Murdock. Murdock went to meet with the judge when the Sin-Eater showed up. Trying to shoot Murdock the Sin-Eater shot and killed the judge instead.

Spider-Man quickly went to meet with Stan Carter, a police sargeant and co-worker of DeWolff. Carter revealed DeWolff's badge was not with her body and upon inpection the Sin-Eater was wearing it. After shooting a priest, the Sin-Eater then went after Spider-Man, who dodged the Sin-Eater's bullets leaving a bystander to face the brunt of the blast. The Sin-Eater got away in the aftermath and went after J. Jonah Jameson at his home and instead found Betty Brant who he then shot at. Betty missed the bullets barely, and Spider-Man arrived soon after.

Defeating the human Sin-Eater, Spider-Man unmasked him as sargeant Stan Carter, and it was only through the timely assistence of Daredevil that Spider-Man did not kill Carter. Spider-Man's beating left Carter cripped however, and with the use of a cane, Carter later held a child at gun point and was gunned down by confused police who then discovered Carter's gun was not loaded. It was revealed following Carter's death that he had been a test subject for SHIELD, and those treatments left him irrational. His mental instability returned following the death of his partner prior to his becoming the Sin-Eater.

It during Carter's original stint as the Sin-Eater that Eddie Brock, a young reporter for the Daily Globe, through police urging, revealed that Emile Gregg was the Sin-Eater. When Carter was unmasked, Brock's career fell apart and led him down a path of hatred towards Spider-Man that resulted in the creation of Venom.

Years later a new SIn-Eater returned, and gunned down several lawyers including Ann Weying, the ex-wife of Brock. As Venom, Brock went after the new Sin-Eater who was actually Emile Gregg, in a battle that ended with Gregg's death.

Powers and Abilities: The original Sin-Eater, Stan Carter, had the abilities of a average, in shape male, with good marksman abilities. The other Sin-Eaters have had similar abilities.
