Quick background info on the movies. You see, there were two Evangelion movies made. Each one was two parts. The first one consisted of a "symphony" of scenes from the original series, plus a cliffhanger episode. The second movie consisted of the cliffhanger episode from the first movie, plus the conclusion. So, three parts and two movies. Got it? Good. Now, the first movie was called Death and Rebirth, and the second was called End of Evangelion. This is a review of the second.
Most people already know pretty much what happens during this movie, even if they haven't seen it before. It, like the original series can be neatly divided into two parts: badguy killing, and pointless confusing symbolism. The former is part one, and the latter is part two.
In the first half, Seele tries to take control of NERV rather forcibly. After the creators "subtly" manage to slip in some crap about the "barrier of 666" (666 is the number of the beast, which the Devil marks on his followers. I think. It doesn't really matter anyway, just ignore it), the real fun starts, as the entire cast gets picked off one by one. Blood, gore, guns, yay! Fun fun!
After the bloodbath, Asuka gets sent out in 02 to do battle with about 7 enemies. At once. But that's OK, because they're all idiots and she finally manages to break out of her super-depressive state and royally kick ass. Very cool.
After she finishes the last of them though, it starts getting weird. Part one ends a few minutes after, and sanity ends with it.
Part two is everything that was bad about the last tape. Multiplied by ten. Seriously screwed up. I'm not entirely sure what happens. I won't burden you with spoilers because I don't even know what the spoilers are. I know basically what happens at the end, though. I could just imagine Shinji and Asuka's conversation.
"Well, Asuka, I've got good news and I've got bad news. The good news is that you're alive. The bad news is, well, let me put it to you this way: did you really mean that thing about if I was the last man alive?"
Of course, there are things other than the plot here. The animation is damn good. Really damn good. It's even better than the series, and the series has some of the best animation I've ever seen. It's too bad that most of the animation is used to depict strange and unitelligable scenes. The music is also damn good, with plenty of songs from the original and some remixes as well. But you really weren't expecting anything else, were you?
Overall: Despite how much I complain sometimes, it's not that bad, and the super-cool first part mostly makes up for the super-lame second part. Still, it would have been much better if they could have gotten the second part to be as good as the first part was.
