King John of England set out to wage war in France, but he ended up helping to
create the MAGNA CARTA, a milestone of human rights. John alienated his Barons
with high taxes to support his campaigns in France, and by enforcing punishment
without trial and other abuses. The Barons revolted in 1215 and were joined by
many free men. That June, in a meadow at Runnymede outside London, John was
forced to sign a document guranteeing rights and protections for the citizenry.
The Magna Carta Libertatum-the Great Charter of Liberty-drew on previous
agreements granting rights to the nobility. What makes it unusual is that it
applied rights and protections to all free men. It provides protection for
vassals, merchants, cities and even ports. The Magna Carta was a major influence
on the U.S. Constitution.
