Tourism in Jordan Tourism plays a significant role in any country?s national income. As a result, Jordan, the land of civilization, depends to a great extent on tourism industry. Activating the role of the tourism industry to highlight Jordan's attractions and to distinguish Jordan as a unique tourism destination, and in appreciation of the role of tourism to national income by generating foreign exchange earnings, and, in recognition of the important role of the private sector in investment and development, this Ministry will work towards developing tourism in a comprehensive and integrated approach to express the nation's legacy, culture, history, heritage, inheritance, successive civilizations and economic prosperity as well as enhancing the noble human values based on peace and mutual respect among nations. How can you link together investment, income-generating projects, education, safeguarding cultural heritage and maintaining ecosystem integrity as well as protecting the environment? The answer is one buzzword: Eco-tourism is an innovative scheme of tourism whereby tourism activity is shifted towards sites and localities of explicit natural and ecological wonders. Tourists will interact actively with natural components and learn about ecological uniqueness; all within the context of sustainable use of ecological sites (protected areas and reserves) and protecting the environment. The following factors play an important role in promoting tourism industry and in helping countries make tourism a vital sector that contributes much to their national income: ? Tourism is a prime economic activity of most of the countries of the Mediterranean Basin. It constitutes a determinant factor in development, co-operation and peace among the peoples of the Basin and their neighbors. ? Tourism can only evolve harmoniously within a vision of development which is sustainable. It must be conceived and managed as an activity which respects customs and traditions of the host countries and which is globally beneficial to them and their environment. ? There is a close relationship and interdependence among tourism, the infrastructures of transport and communication, urbanization, as well as marine, agricultural, industrial and commercial activities, along with technology and innovative research. ? There is a responsibility of both the host countries in the Mediterranean Basin and the tourism-generating countries in managing human and natural resources toward the development of tourism. ? The continuous development of tourism is an economic necessity. This can only be done within the framework of real international co-operation at the level of the Mediterranean Basin. It is a fact that Jordan has been affected in the past few years by the instability in the area, but great efforts have been made to bring back tourism into its days of glory. Thus, the government has developed new policies to attract more tourists to visit the historical and biblical places. New excavations have also contributed much to make tourists decide to visit this distinguished and secure country. |
