Fifa 98 : Road to world cup

Review by : Crazy Review

Format : PC, PSX

Type : Football

Players : 1 - 2

Looking back across the vast number of Fifa games, RTWC98 is one of the best. This game started off EA's Fifa improvements. The previous efforts like Fifa 97 was terrible, the controls were poor and you never did feel in control. So Ea had to buckle up thier ideas if they were to create and successful series of games. A perfect chance came along in the form of the World Cup. Nagging the World Cup licence, this gave EA the perfect chance to make a decent football game, and they didn't disappoint. The main contender for the football crown was Gremlins actua scoccer 2 and so alot serious lot of work was needed to beat this tilte which was favourite among game reviewers. EA managed to pull it off and it became an instant hit and riding high in the UK game charts for quite a while. It managed to sort out the awful fifa series and build a stepping stone for future releases. Thats the background story over with lets get down to the game itself.

The PC version graphics are sharp and looks really lush and very detailed even without the need of a 3D graphics card so you can give your Voodoo a rest while you play this. It runs very smooth and does a little gets a bit jerky at times but does manage to keep a constant frame rate. This title is full of the EA polish that makes its games stand out and this one is no exception, from the fantastic intro movie with Blurs song2 to the very polished graphics. You can choose to take your favourite team all the way to the World Cup. EA includes some beatiufully animated player moves from the throw ins to the goal kick. Everything is very polished and makes for a great football package. The player moves are so un-PC like which makes this title even more special and its my favourite fifa of the lot. For some reason the great feature of RTWC98 was the fantastic five-a-side game which has been removed from future fifa titles. This is worth buying for this alone, great fun with some friends. The league function isn't great but this is not the main fuinction of this title. This may not have the updated player and teams like Fifa 2000 but this is a great football title and nows its on budget label there is no excuse why you shouldn't buy this great Fifa title.
