Sorta like the cows, there are some things you just have to be in New York to see. OpSail, however, isn't one of those things. Every so often, this parade of ships parades all over America, in and out of every port known to man, and lets the peons (read as: you and me) wait for impossible lengths of time to climb all over them. It's a photographer's dream come true.
Being in New York did have it's perks, though, as we got to spend the 4th of July with the ships. These are the pictures I took during the week-long deal...including some of the Irish ship the Asgard II and a few shots from the Intrepid (which is kinda ALWAYS there, but pretty wicked anyway). There are quite a number of these, so I've divided them into several pages. Navigating shouldn't be too difficult...

THIS is Kaiwo Maru from Japan. The name supposedly means "King of the Sea", but I'd be more inclined to say it means "Big Ass Boat". This one's the largest ship in port for the celebration.

The prow of the Kaiwo Maru.

Traditional Japanese windsocks flying over the Kaiwo Maru.

Kaiwo Maru at a distance (from the 4th of July parade of sail) with what I believe may be tugs crossing it's path.

Tall ships and Porta Potties line up at the Seaport.

The famous Ambrose lightship. It's always there at the Seaport, but since I had a camera...

The Spanish Sagres waved itself in our faces at the Seaport, with some big, nasty sailor bloke roaring in broken English that - "You no can board ship today!!" Heh. Well, I could still take pictures. This sign tells you in both Spanish and English everything you need to know about the ship. (And you can actually make some of it out here)

The nasty bastard from the Sagres yells at tourists.

The Sagres, from the distance. Gorgeous, ain't she? This was taken at the parade of sail on the 4th and it was just about the only ship big enough to be seen from where I was standing....well, with the exception of Kaiwo Maru, which as we all know means "Big Ass Boat" in Japanese. ;)

I reeeeeally wanted to test out my adopted nation's legendary fire power in the form of that BITCHIN' tank. But the police lines precluded my doing so. Ah, nuts...
