The Pyrrhic War: A Special In-Depth Report |
The Samchorage Civil War
Capitalizing upon the new air of freedom, Samchorage citizens spontaneously took the streets to demand full democracy and accountability in addition to full civil liberties. For an entire week the people of Samchorage looted and destroyed buildings. Casualties, nearly 100,000 in number, mounted for both the armed forces and the citizenry. On Saturday, July 15, 2000, the President agreed to give the people full civil liberties in return for civil obedience. Afraid of an impending Rattanjeetarr invasion as broadcasted by government propaganda, leaders of the protesting factions agreed and by Monday, July 17, 2000, the President was in full control of his nation.
Rattanjeetland Diplomacy
While Samchorage plunged into anarchy, Rattanjeetland accepted the Samchorage ultimatum and a Marcusburg-sponsored peace agreement. The latter agreement decided territorial changes. Samchorage received land from Rattanjeetland which would allow it to construct a superhighway linking its colonies while the Ethnarch received an equal amount of land lost in the Norterr Crisis. In the waning days of the civil war, the Ethnarch had further ambitions and decided to use the situation in Samchorage to his full advantage – he would avenge the humiliation of the Norterr Crisis which happened so long ago. Simultaneously, however, threatening gestures from the Samchorage government sparked fear in Rattanjeetland politicians. The President embarked on several anti-Rattanjeetland campaigns to rally the people behind him so that he would be able to take back control of his country. The propaganda drives provided sufficient grounds for the pacifist Adiposia to approve conscription for all those between 18 and 25 years of age. Subsequently, the Rattanjeetland army became the largest force on the Mapp with around 470,000 troops.
Pre-War Events
The increase in the number of troops alarmed the President. Having already caught wind of the Ethnarch’s intention to avenge the Norterr Crisis, he decided to take action against Rattanjeetland. In the meantime, the Adiposia debated over further defensive measures. On Sunday, July 16, 2000, the President of Samchorage notified the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg of his intention to declare war on Rattanjeetland. Bound by the Pact of Steel and the Alliance, Marcusburg decided to remain neutral in the upcoming conflict. However, the Marcusburg ambassador in Rattanjeetland urged the Adiposia to grant concessions to Samchorage in an effort to avoid war. The Ethnarch was convinced and agreed to four concessions - the first being a cession of territory to Samchorage; the second being a full-scale apology over the Telegram Incident; the third being a monument in Rattanjeetland immortalizing the apology over the Telegram Incident; and the fourth being future consultation with Samchorage before Rattanjeetland embarked on new military developments. Samchorage agreed to the concessions and gave one concession of its own: Rattanjeetland would not be annihilated.
The Fall of Diplomacy
In spite of the concessions granted, the President of Samchorage declared war on Rattanjeetland at 1:00 AM on Monday, July 17, 2000. At this time, the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg strongly urged Dockmaster Alto to remain neutral in the conflict. The latter agreed and in the morning the war began. The civil war destroyed many crucial Samchorage institutions such as the air base, weapons factory, and the back-up cruise missile system. However, the President ordered the attack anyway in order to “teach Rattanjeetland a lesson”.
The Decline of Modern Warfare
Five devastating electromagnetic pulses disabled and demolished the Johkrana (Rattanjeetland spy agency), Rattanjeetarr barracks, and Space Command. Careful attention was taken to minimize damage to the structure of Space Command. Swiftly following, Rattanjeetarr cruise missiles pounded the Samchorage army base in New Hope South. With its barracks destroyed, Samchorage counter-attacked with a rapidly-prepared joint strike involving spies and cruise missiles on the Rattanjeetarr missile sites. Initially unsuccessful, the spies used suicide bombing techniques to destroy the sites. Air defenses gone, the Ethnarch mobilized his huge militia and cut off power to the entire Mapp by turning off the fusion power plant.
The Ground War
Samchorage troops readily entered and occupied the northwestern province and the Rattanjeetland International Airport. The Rattanjeetland militia attacked surprised Samchorage troops and at one point nearly occupied all of Samchorage New Hope South. However, once given time to adjust, the President’s troops battled back the invaders and a coordinated attack was launched from the Prime and the Colonies. Throughout the whole ground war, Samchorage cruise missiles continuously pounded random targets in Rattanjeetland as they proved ineffective against countering Rattanjeetland militia members. The relatively non-militarized Rattanjeetland colony put up a valiant fight but was eventually overwhelmed as trained troops performed battle with senior citizens and expectant mothers. In the northern front, Samchorage troops slaughtered untrained militia members as each Rattanjeetland counter-attack was met with a stronger Samchorage response.
Trench Warfare
Deciding that too much territory was being lost, the Ethnarch ordered the militia remaining to stay and fight. The result was trench warfare with the trenches hastily dug and filling with bodies. Cruise missiles rained over top the trenches and devastated the static Rattanjeetarr militiamen below. If the militiamen moved, the Samchorage troops were given an opportunity to advance and more territory was lost. Territory was gained and lost by both powers, with Samchorage making more gains and Rattanjeetland suffering more losses.
Denouement
For hours, the war of attrition dragged on until every militiaman in Rattanjeetland had lost his life or deserted. Likewise, the Samchorage armed forces suffered terrible losses as many Rattanjeetland troops performed Kamikaze missions with the sole purpose of killing anyone or anything from Samchorage. With no militia left to speak of, Rattanjeetland colony surrendered and Samchorage troops occupied the portions which remained independent during the war. A handful of spies which retained their lives was sent to secure control of the independent territory. The guns remain silent in the northern front but no statement of surrender has been received by the President from the Ethnarch. It is generally agreed, nevertheless, that Rattanjeetland has lost the war.
