Pyrrhic War Rages On: A Special In-Depth Report

Following the stunning territorial gains by Samchorage where Rattanjeetland witnessed the loss of its entire southern colony and 3/5 of its Prime, the Ethnarch grew harsh and refused to surrender. Instead, he conscripted all able-bodied citizens and formed a new 281,964 army from his remaining population of 414,043. While Samchorage troops began entrenching their control over the newly gained land, Rattanjeetarr troops stormed the front and acquired bits of captured territory once lost. Samchorage counterattacked swiftly with its deadly electromagnetic pulses. Without barracks and scattered throughout the nation, new and inexperienced Rattanjeetarr troops proved especially vulnerable to the pulses as many were killed or wounded through electric fires and explosions. Nevertheless, the Rattanjeetland attack continued and the Ethnarch managed to avenge some territorial losses. Simultaneously, Samchorage troops began their counterattack. 41,067 strong with cruise missiles aiding them from above, they devastated the Rattanjeetland army at great cost. When the dust cleared, Rattanjeetland lost all its troops and Samchorage was left with 182 infantrymen. Surprisingly, the Ethnarch’s forces held off Samchoragean troops in the reacquired lands.

Civilian Slaughter
Enraged by the Ethnarch’s refusal to surrender and afraid of continued conscription, the President of Samchorage embarked on an appalling quest to wipe out civilians. When fighting at the front stopped, the smell of rotting flesh pervaded the landscape and rain began to fall. Both the people of Samchorage and Rattanjeetland were bathed in mud with no electricity or running water. In Rattanjeetland, however, conditions were much worse as Samchoragean cruise missiles accompanied the rain. Civilians were especially vulnerable at this time as they entered their war-gutted homes for shelter from miserable conditions. As the suburb, or what was left of it, was the only relatively intact structure in Rattanjeetland, it proved to be a tempting target for the President. The latter fell to temptation and massacred 131,909 Rattanjeetarr civilians in cold blood. The elderly and the young, huddling together in small shacks, began running for their lives once the sight of missiles lit up the night sky. Those that did not perish directly from the cruise missile attacks died in the ensuing rush from the suburb, in which many were trampled to death. The cruise missile attacks lasted the entire night and without shelter, those that made it out of the suburb froze to death or died from hunger and disease. Anarchy accompanied the chaos and the citizens emerged in packs – ready to defend provisions with their lives. When morning struck, Rattanjeetland lay in ruins – a mere 170 survivors remained, including the Ethnarch. The President basked in the glory of victory.

Armistice and Consequence
During the renewed war, foreign powers had warned the President against a civilian slaughter. At this time, the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg proposed that both Rattanjeetland and Samchorage sign an armistice for the time being. Afterwards, the two powers would negotiate over a permanent peace settlement at Ambassador Hall in Marcusburg. Samchorage swiftly agreed to the armistice following the slaughter since in so doing, should Rattanjeetland take further action, it would be committing an illegal action. Marcusburg strongly hinted that any withdrawal from the negotiations or renewed confrontation would result in escalating the war to include another Great Power. This development was greeted with enthusiasm in Siggary, which has remained firmly opposed to the Pyrrhic War. As of yet, the Ethnarch has not responded. In the meantime, human rights organizations in New Weimar violently condemn the President’s actions and have begun lobbying governments all over the Mapp to take action against Samchorage. Civil unrest threatens to break out in Samchorage as nationalistic citizens celebrating victory may unleash their anger concerning poor living conditions on these activists. Opposition parties in the Fletplase, the Marcusburg Parliament, have tabled a joint motion to deny Samchorage loans for reconstruction. Congressional Parliament has formally charged Samchorage with genocide. The Secretary-General is planning to hold an urgent vote by member-states over this issue as soon as possible.
