Buenos Altos Reforms
After months of extensive work by GX and local officials, a republic was officially proclaimed in Buenos Altos on April 26, 2002. As a result, the country has become a unicameral democracy although elections have yet to be held. A special department has been established in the GX Headquarters in Marcusburg, the Mandates Commission, to oversee the growth and development of the two GX Mandates - Buenos Altos and West El-Hussaq.
The smoldering ruins of the sprawling Buenos Altos military installation that had caused widespread apprehension in Meijing months earlier has been cleared. However, with the loss of the base, 80% of the nation is unemployed. In its place is a new residential development and professional centre. Many locals are hoping that the new multinational corporations established in the country will provide them with jobs. Already Gorditas, Lindsholm, and Marcusburg have signed free trade pacts with the new Buenos Altos government to help give the companies a head start.
Although the new reforms are widely viewed as positive, many expect the Hanseatic League to vehemently denounce the reforms as GX interference in a nation regarded as Hanseatic. In the War of 2K2, the leader of the old regime, Lord Somerset, had stated after his abdication to Rattanjeetland that he wanted Buenos Altos to join the League. However, many experts strongly doubt that the GX would relinquish control as it rebuilds the nation in an attempt to stabilize the Northeast.
