Nosheenada Plunges Into Chaos
While the world remained fixated on the Octavian Crisis, another of the Mapp's hotspots started smouldering, and plunged deep into civil war on March 26.

Nosheenada has long been plagued with financial and domestic strife stemming from the militaristic ambitions of its fascist leader, the Supreme Ruler. In late June of 2003, she ordered the country to build a state-of-the-art military base, the first of its kind not located in a Great or Major Power. The result: out and out bankruptcy.

Although the Supreme Ruler cried out for help belatedly, her country was unable to pay off debts owed to the then-WDA (now the World Bank). Accordingly, the WDA partitioned the country into two and auctioned off the western portion to the highest bidder.

On July 21, West Nosheenada changed hands and was annexed into Marcusburg. The move triggered protests through East Nosheenada aimed at bringing down the Supreme Ruler. However, riots were put down swiftly and ruthlessly.

The Supreme Ruler then decided to pursue a policy of fiscal solvency. Nevertheless, spontaneous demonstrations occurred frequently and were routinely dissolved by the infamous 'Pinkshirts' - the ruthless paramilitary organization on which the Supreme Ruler relied to restore order in Nosheenada.

Fascism and instability scared off foreign investors while economic activity inside the country was close to nil. As a result, the country's finances hemorrhaged and began to bleed the coffers dry.

In January 2004, the Supreme Ruler put out a desperate bid for the IV Jeetanic Games to replenish the treasury. But the International Jeetanic Committee (IJC) awarded the Games to Pauldelphia instead.

Without foreign intervention, Nosheenada was forced to declare bankruptcy in late March. The development proved to be the final straw for the already disenfranchised Nosheenadan people.

On the evening of March 26, demonstrations against the government turned violent. In spite of the best efforts of the Pinkshirts, the opposition had mobilized and split into two distinct camps. The leftists managed to capture most of the country, including the Pentagon, forcing the government to flee to the national military base. Meanwhile, the rightists overtook an explosives factory and are using the installation as a base of operations.

Facing the deaths of over 28,000 people, the Supreme Ruler resigned on March 27 and appointed a new leader to head the hastily formed Nosheenadan monarchy. However, the move only placated the rightists who proclaimed their loyalty to the new government. The leftists retain control of half the country.

On the morning of March 28, an envoy from Marcusburg arrived in Nosheenada with the aim of bringing stability to the country. The Prime Chancellor feared that unrest in Nosheenada would destabilize neighbouring Lethohan province, part of which is formed from what was once West Nosheenada.

Using the country's International Relief Agency (I-RAM), Marcusburg offered Nosheenada a one billion alto grant in return for a number of internal reforms. The Queen accepted and accordingly dissolved the one-day old monarchy to establish a democracy.

The move immediately appeased the leftists who agreed to share power in a ruling coalition with the fascist loyalists and the rightists. Nosheenada also agreed to sign a free trade pact and treaty of friendship with Marcusburg. As her last move in office, the Queen decreed that more help for the poor and disabled would be forthcoming in the form of the Salvation Army.

With the formation of a transitional democratic government, the civil war in Nosheenada has come to an end. The country has a new leader - the Supreme Prime Minister - and hopefully this hotspot of instability in the Mapp's south will finally gain a measure of peace and prosperity.
