In a historic ceremony, the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg signed over control of Samchorage to a domestic leader on April 8, formally establishing the new Republic of Grahambridge.
For nearly a month, a provisional council in Samchorage cobbled together by diplomats from Marcusburg worked frantically to put in place the framework necessary for a power transfer to occur. At the same time, ambassadors from eight different countries had been requested to meet at the Winter Palace in Marcusburg to discuss their suggestions and concerns for such a handover.
In the end, the people chose a new President to lead their new country, Grahambridge, into the post-Samchoragean era. A well-known, prestigious, and prominent member of the judiciary, nearly 100,000 people eagerly awaited their new President to address them in the square outside the Samokritzg (Parliament) where the formalities were taking place. By evening, celebrations had wrapped up and the square began to clear. The truly hard work now begins.
In the so-called 'Goodfaith Accords' which outlines the details of the transition, Grahambridge inherits the entire land, money, and infrastructure of Samchorage. The Samchoragean military is decommissioned and the new government may decide to remilitarize in the future. Likewise, the country has dismantled its nuclear-equivalent arsenal but has the freedom to develop such technologies should it so wish.
Diplomatic relations and trade links need to be renewed in order to become active. Because negotiations between Marcusburg and Congressional Parliament over nascent country protection reached an impasse, Marcusburg has agreed to provide Grahambridge with three months of protection in case of foreign aggression.
While the new people of Grahambridge have high hopes riding on their new President, response from abroad has been somewhat more restrained as the international community remains cautiously optimistic. Many expect that with the founding of Grahambridge, the 'Samchorage Question', which has plagued the world for nearly a year, will finally come to an end.
