Saga of the El-Hussaqs
Ever since its inception, the Free Republic of an Elective El-Hussaq, popularly known as Free El-Hussaq within the Nexus and West El-Hussaq within the Confederacy, has been an object of controversy. In the latter part of the month of May, the Allied Control Commission, which had been administering Free El-Hussaq, established a formal system of government for the Nexus creation.
True to its El-Hussaqi roots, a bicameral system was retained. A lower house, known as the Agrabah, and an upper house, known as the Abis Mal, form the legislative branch of the nation. Although technically a constitutional monarchy since El Cid III is supreme ruler, West El-Hussaq is a democracy. However, in being a Nexus protectorate, the nation is democracy with its own special characteristics. Ruling parties and their cabinets may change but the positions of foreign minister and interior minister rest permanently with the Marcusburg and Lindsholm ambassadors respectively.
On June 4, 2001, the Agrabah passed a controversial piece of legislation which approved the cession of Noe province to the Republic of Gorditas. By all accounts the vote was fair and open, although the results shocked many in the press gallery.
Meanwhile, in the El-Hussaqi Republic, an entirely new nation has sprung up from the wild plains of Terra Nova. With majestic and graceful mansions and condominiums lining a charming commerical sector, East El-Hussaq shows little wounds left over from the hell-raising War of 2K1. However, plans by El Cid II, President of East El-Hussaq, for construction of a grand dam stretching the width of the river requires the use of Lindsholm land on the other side. Not surprisingly, the prospect of ceding land for construction of the dam was not warmly received by the Supreme Viceroy of Lindsholm.
Nevertheless, the dam raised one important issue. The river itself was never defined boundarily between Nexus and Confederate nations. A quick survey of ambassadors from all nations involved indicated that all nations would attempt to vie for as much water as possible.
