Phoenix Confederacy Dissolved
Cold War Era Comes to an End

At 10:01PM on September 3, 2001, the Ethnarch of Rattanjeetland, de facto leader of the Phoenix Confederacy, issued a press release detailing the dissolution of the international organization. The development revolutionizes the face of international diplomacy, as the Cold War system comes to an abrupt end.

The Phoenix Confederacy was once known as the Rattanjeetland Confederacy, formed as a result of the Portaltan Abdication, by which the Chief Hobo of Portalto abdicated to Marcusburg. In order to compensate for the shift in the balance of power, the Prime Chancellor of Marcusburg granted independence to Rattanjeetland, which was then a Marcusburg protectorate since Rattanjeetland sought protection from Samchorage following the Pyrrhic War.

With the annexation of Portalto into Marcusburg, Samchoragean plans to conquer Portalto were foiled and the President of Samchorage bitterly abdicated his entire nation to Rattanjeetland. The development boosted the Ethnarch's power into true Great Power status. Emboldened, the Rattanjeetland Confederacy was soon formed and quickly gained momentum as a political force to be reckoned with. With the accession of El-Hussaq and Kamograd into the organization, the Confederacy became an aggressive power bloc, as demonstrated in the Confederate Lebensraum.

Late in December 2000, the Ethnarch and the former President of Samchorage finalized talks on restoration and the Republican Empire of Samchorage was restored. Due to the newfound friendship of both powers, Samchorage joined the Rattanjeetland Confederacy, providing further legitimacy to the organization as an aggressive power bloc. To acknowledge the true international spectrum of the bloc, it was renamed to the "Phoenix Confederacy".

Encouraged by the announced abdication of the Supreme Viceroy of Lindsholm, the Phoenix Confederacy decided to test its military might in the disastrous War of 2K1. Directly afterwards, the Riksholm Treaty severely limited the military aspirations of the Phoenix Confederacy. Nevertheless, the organization remained a crucial counterbalance to the influence of the Platinum Nexus.

The outbreak of the Zeradit War in August exposed the underlying weaknesses of the Confederacy. Months of silence had given courage to those with dissenting opinions from within. Inaction by the leaders of the Confederacy to contain the expressions of discontent, known as the Torloskampf, proved fatal as mere words turned into concrete military action when Wendorra la Vella declared war on Nemangrade, in effect triggering a Confederate civil war.

However, the conflict quickly dragged powers outside of the Confederacy into battle. Kamograd intervened to protect Nemangrade and Samchorage declared war on Kamograd to protect Wendorra la Vella. Secret alliances between Lindsholm and Kamograd, and Lindsholm and Wendorra la Vella, brought that nation into the war. Combined, the Kamograd and Lindsholm militaries forced the President of Samchorage to surrender. In a surprising turn of events, Lindsholm then declared war on Kamograd, with Gorditan support. The development resulted in the abdication of Kamograd to Marcusburg.

The Zeradit War eliminated Kamograd as an effective member of the Confederacy. A few days later, Samchorage announced its departure from the power bloc leaving Rattanjeetland as the sole major power in the organization. To somewhat restore the balance of power, the Consulplatz Treaty which ended the Zeradit War made all remaining Confederate powers, save Miketon, Rattanjeetland protectorates.

In effect, the Phoenix Confederacy had become a vestigial organ and the Ethnarch's announcement made little practical difference in Rattanjeetland operations but held great symbolic importance. Many on the Mapp hope that the atmosphere of tension and mutual distrust arising from the Cold War system will come to an end and a new open multi-polar world will begin.
