Supermarkets

The first time I walked into a supermarket I was shocked. Rows and rows of freezers all containing boxes of food. From "Italian style" chicken to fillets of chicken, even hamburgers. The boxes are a little over a kilo and you throw them in the freezer and then take it out and microwave (or stick in the oven depending on what you have).

Processed food to the most unbelievable degree is available in all shapes and sizes. Fresh produce is not an easy task.

For run-of-the-mill pantry items and very minimal fresh food, and probably the cheapest items No Frills is your supermarket. You need to put a quarter into the trolleys (cart) to enable you to get them off the chains. If you take the trolley (cart) back, you can retrieve your quarter. Bags are also not for free. At 5c a piece (plus gst & pst) you best save those bags and re-use them!

Dominion & Loblaws are the 2 expensive (by comparison) supermarkets, but they stock the best range in 'normal' food. You don't need to buy the bags for your shopping there either.

I liken No Frills to Franklins, Dominion to Coles and Loblaws to Woolworths.

Loblaws & Dominion also have a few 24hour supermarkets around the place. Which believe it or not, is a pretty new thing around here.

Otherwise don't expect them to open till atleast 9am weekdays (until about 6pm) and on Saturdays 10am, Sundays 11am-noon.

Butchers, Bakers and Green Grocers are a thing of the past. You won't see to many around the place at all. The ones I have seen look so grotty and in need of a health inspection I wouldn't shop there anyway.
