Randall Schwalbe has been music director of The Notables since 1982, only a few years after the group was founded. He graduated from the UCLA music department many years ago. Before launching a career in aerospace, he was a high school band director in Northern California. Locally he has conducted and directed musicals with the Prime Time Players, the South Bay Light Opera Society, the Torrance Community Theatre, and Manhattan Beach Community Church. He has directed several choral groups, including the Ellis-Orpheus Men's Choir. Randall also runs a trombone quartet and plays in various orchestras in the South Bay. He plays trombone in the pit for shows in the area. In 2002 he directed and conducted the Manhattan Beach Community Church production of Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as conducting the orchestra for Mira Costa High's production of Sweet Charity. Whenever they get a chance, he and his wife Mary enjoy a getaway to their little cottage in Cambria. He says, "My mother thought I had no talent...a prerequisite for conducting."
