Léo Delibes


The French composer Léo Delibes (1836-1891) wrote operettas and ballets.  The best known of these are the ballets Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia ou la nymphe de Diane (1876), and the opera Lakmé (1883).

The ballet Coppélia premiered in 1870, during the Franco-Prussian war at the time of the siege of Paris. The story is based on a story of E. T. A. Hoffmann, which is also the basis of  Act I of Tales of Hoffmann. See these sites:
