Herbal Correspondences for Winter Festivals
By Avril Herries and Callum Mostyn

The evergreen family of firs and pines is the classic winter tree for many people. Trees are often used for "the" tree, and boughs used to freshen and decorate the home.

These trees, along with all other evergreens, symbolise eternal life and rebirth, protection and consecration, and plenty. They are also healers of the spirit - their scent and colour both act to lift the soul and freshen the air. They also bring protection and purification with them, making them an ideal winter plant to bring into the home. Their nature being one of growth at all times makes them strong aids in financial and fertility matters.

Evergreens: cedar, eucalyptus, fir, juniper, palm, pine, spruce, and other evergreen trees

  • Forms: boughs, garlands, trees, wreaths
  • Gods: Attis, Cybele, Dionysius, Hertha, Isis, Kernunnos, Odin, Osiris, Semiramis, Tammuz/Dumuzi, Thor
  • Pagan Paths: Celtic, Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, Roman, Scandinavian, Teutonic

Holly is a plant of luck and health, as well as protection and adorning the home with it brings good cheer to the party. This plant is closely tied to the turning wheel and the end of the old year. The Holly King is the one who dies in Celtic mythology at the winter solstice. In Roman traditions, red-berried trees are used during the Saturnalia and Brumalia festivals. Holly also represents good luck and protection - making it ideal for door wreaths.

  • Forms: boughs, branches, bushes, springs, wreaths
  • Gods: Bacchus, Holly King, Ops, Puck, Santa, Saturnus, Wood Spirits
  • Pagan Paths: Celtic, Roman

Oak, the great protector and holy tree of the old gods, is the ultimate symbol of strength within small things - the boughs of the mighty oak can be heard roaring within the tiniest acorn. Carrying an acorn in your pocket will protect you and bring joy to your heart, wealth to your hands. The oak has a widespread tradition as a sacred tree, holy to various important gods. It is closely tied to the turning wheel and the start of the new year. The Oak King is the one triumphant at the winter solstice in Celtic mythology. The oak also is a strong protective wood.

  • Forms: acorns, boughs, firewood, logs, wreaths
  • Gods: Kernunnos, Jupiter, Oak King, Thor, Zeus
  • Pagan Paths: Baltic, Celtic, Greek, Roman, Scandinavian, Teutonic

Mistletoe has a long history as a sacred and intransient plant. To the Druids this was one of the holiest of herbs, and to the Northern peoples this the one plant able to slay Baldur. This plant is both the bringer of death and the door to life - fertility and love are both awoken by the kiss beneath the mistletoe - and represents peace and healing. It is used to bring rest and draw prosperity.

  • Forms: boughs, sprigs
  • Gods: Baldur, Frigga
  • Pagan Paths: Celtic, Teutonic

Ivy is a plant associated with fertility and life. It brings fidelity, marriage, and happiness to those who live beneath its leaves. It is also a victory plant, bringing with it honour and luck.

  • Forms: crowns, garlands, sprigs, wreaths
  • Gods: Bacchus, Dionysius
  • Pagan Paths: Celtic, Greek, Roman

Grains such as rye, barley, wheat, and so on symbolise plenty, fertility, and life. Reserving some dried stalks, or even a corn dolly or two, to winter over within the home brings an easy winter and health to the family.

  • Forms: food, grain, straw dollies and weavings
  • Gods: Ceres, Demeter, Kore, Ops, Saturnus
  • Pagan Paths: Baltic, Celtic, Roman, Scots, Teutonic

Outside the "living" plant list are some spices that are important to this time. They too are alive, of course, but usually we use the dried or powdered forms. Myrrh, cinnamon, ginger, and frankincense are invaluable in any Solstice celebration. They cleanse and purify the home. They encourage happy loving feelings and tend to chase away anger and resentment. They are also holy spices that bring forth the spiritual side. Potpourri, food, incense, and ritual blends for the altar are all suitable ways to incorporate these.

Myrrh is an ancient plant. It specifically symbolises death, the after life, and purification, and brings inner peace with its scent. It is also beneficial for its healing properties.

  • Forms: incense, oils, resin
  • Gods: Isis, Ra
  • Pagan Paths: Egyptian

Cinnamon is powerful in love and passion rituals, as well as matters relating to finance and luck.

  • Forms: incense, oils, powder, quills
  • Gods: Aphrodite, Attis, Blodeuwedd, Cybele, Eostre, Gaia, Green Man, Isis, Ishtar, Kernunnos, Mithras, Odin, Osiris, Venus
  • Pagan Paths: Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, Roman, Scandinavian, Teutonic

Ginger is a plant of fire, bringing its heat to bear in matters requiring courage and strength. A plant of healing, it is also lucky.

  • Forms: incense, oil, powder, root
  • Gods: Aphrodite, Athena, Attis, Cybele, Eostre, Gaia, Green Man, Hera, Isis, Ishtar, Kernunnos, Mithras, Odin, Osiris, Pan
  • Pagan Paths: Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, Roman, Scandinavian, Teutonic

Frankincense has been considered sacred for thousands of years. It purifies, consecrates, and protects, and its scent increases spiritual awareness and focus.

  • Forms: incense, oils, resin
  • Gods: Ba'al, Bel, Ra
  • Pagan Paths: Egyptian, Greek, Mesopotamian, Roman
