Ratios of essential oil in preparations:

  • massage oil - 1 ounce carrier & 12 drops total
  • oil burner - preblend the essential oils and then add 3-5 drops to water
  • bath oil - 1 ounce carrier to 15 drops total
  • room spray - 1 ounce distilled water to 10 drops total

Cautions

  1. Essential oils are very concentrated - less is more. Always use less than you think you need and add more if necessary
  2. If pregnant, use half the amount of essential oil to avoid affecting the developing fetus.
  3. Everyone reacts differently to oils - amounts given in "recipes" are often guides. It is the proportion that matters more than the amount.
  4. Never apply pure, undiluted essential oils directly to skin as they can burn - use a carrier oil.
  5. Do a patch test before using a new oil - apply a drop to the back of your wrist/hand and leave for two hours. If it becomes red, sore, itchy, or irritated wash immediately with cold water and do not use the oil.
  6. Not all essential oils are suitable for skin and most are definately not for consumption - always check the properties before use use a reputable text, preferably one used in aromatherapy and herbal instructive courses.
  7. Keep all oils stored out of reach of children and animals.
  8. The proportions suitable to adults are much higher than that suited to children. Many oils are not suitable for children at all. Always check and doublecheck dosage and oil in that reference text you use. As a standard rule use at most half the adult dosage for children 6-12 years of age.
  9. For babies up to 1 year use 1 drop of the BABY SAFE OILS oils in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil and for children 1-5 years, a maximum of 3 drops of the CHILD SAFE OILS in a tablespoon of carrier oil. Use for massage or bathing
  10. There are a variety of carrier oils for use in blending essential oils - such as Sweet Almond, Grapeseed, and Jojoba.
  11. Keep essential oils away from eyes and ears - rinse with vegetable oil if you do get oil in eyes.
  12. Keep out of the sun, stored in tightly closed amber or cobalt-blue glass bottles

Homemade Room Deodoriser

Experiemnt with using actual spices rather than oils - a cheaper and just as effective way to create the ideal room-deodoriser! Try placing a 3-inch stick of cinnamon and a cracked vanilla bean in one pint of alcohol, shake and leave to cure. Or 2 tablespoons of various "cooking" spices (such as allspice, ginger, nutmeg, or cloves).

Homemade Scents for the Home

To create a blend to scent your sheets, pillows, rooms, etc, blend the oils with pure grain alcohol or 100 proof vodka. Alcohol-infused oils mature, so mix it up, seal and leave in a dark room for a couple of weeks prior to using.
