Northern Dancer was a small horse, who had powerful front legs a thick neck and the heart and drive to be a champion. He won 14 out of the 18 races during his two year racing career. The Triple Crown is thoroubred racings most famous prize. in order to acheive it ou must win three races: Kentucky Derby(1 1/4 miles) the Preakness(1 3/16miles) and the Belmont Stakes(1 1/2 miles).  in 1962, Northern Dancer won the Kentucky Durby in record time: 2 minutes flat. He was the first horse from Canada to win the race, and his record stood for almost a decade! Two weeks later he won the Preakness. The Belmont was three weeks after that, but the Belmont is a longer race and Northern Dacer had problems running that far and fell in third. A tendon injury ended his career later that year. After he was Retired. Some of Northern Dancers offspring became champions themselves. Northern Dancer lived a long time for a horse, but died in 1990 at the age of 29. His owner and breeder was E.P. Taylor and his trainer was Horatio Luro. Northern Dancers sire was Native Dancer.
