I am not sure why I chose my specialty area other than it is where I feel I belong. I have learned that not all children can be cured of their disease process and that they die not so pleasant deaths. Possibly it is because of my naivete or ignorance of how to assist the child with cancer to die with dignity that has brought me to where I am today. I've realized my expectations are too idealistic. I am learning to view death as a beginning rather than an end. These children fight battles with more courage than I could ever imagine - oft time with minimal reward in return.
